What makes a heart look right
A heart is the hardest shape to cut well, because the cutter has to balance two lobes, a cleft and a point on one stone. Judge it on four things:
- Symmetry. Fold the heart down the middle in your head. Both lobes should be the same size and height.
- The cleft. The notch between the lobes should be sharp and clear. A shallow cleft makes the stone read as a pear or an oval from across the room.
- Width to length. Most buyers like a ratio close to 1.00. Under about 0.90 looks wide and squat; over about 1.10 looks long and thin.
- The point. It should line up with the cleft, and it needs a V-prong or a bezel tip so it does not chip.
Size matters more on a heart
Small hearts lose their outline. Under about half a carat, the cleft is so small that the stone can look round once it is set and on a hand. That is one reason our hearts start at real size: the listed totals run from 2.00 to 3.14 carats, and R-0039 carries a 1.55 carat center. If the shape is the point of the ring, buy enough stone for people to see it.
For a feel of how carat weight turns into millimeters, read carat size on the hand.
Why E color and VS1 suit a heart
Hearts have a wide face and two lobes where color can gather, so a warm stone shows it. E is the second-whitest grade on GIA's D-to-Z color scale. VS1 means small inclusions that a trained grader finds with effort under 10x magnification, and the stone looks clean to the eye. That pair keeps a heart looking icy without paying for a grade nobody can see. More on the grades in E color VS1 diamond rings.
Picking the gold for a heart
Most of our hearts sit in 14K white gold, which makes an E stone look its whitest. R-0125 is the 14K yellow heart, and R-0095 is in 10K yellow for buyers who want warm gold and a harder metal. 10K holds 41.7% pure gold and 14K holds 58.3%, so 10K is a bit tougher and 14K a bit richer in color. The full breakdown is in 10K vs 14K gold and yellow vs white gold.
Who wears a heart ring
A heart says what it means without words, which is why buyers pick it for anniversaries, promise rings and engagement rings for people who want something other than a round. It also works as a right-hand ring. On a slim finger a 2 carat heart looks bold; on a wider finger it sits balanced. If you are still choosing between shapes, start with how to pick an engagement ring shape.
