Oval Lab Diamond Engagement Rings: More Size for the Carat

The short answer

An oval diamond looks larger than a round of the same carat weight because more of it faces up, and its length makes the finger look slimmer. Ratios from about 1.30 to 1.60 cover most tastes. Franky Diamonds' house ovals are lab-grown, E color and VS1 clarity, in 14K gold from $1,500 to $5,200.

Why ovals look bigger

Carat is weight, not size. An oval spreads its weight over a longer, shallower outline, so it shows more surface from the top. Approximate face-up sizes for well-cut stones:

WeightRound diameterOval, about 1.40 ratio
1 ct6.5 mm7.7 x 5.7 mm
1.5 ct7.4 mm9.0 x 6.4 mm
2 ct8.1 mm10.0 x 7.0 mm
3 ct9.3 mm11.3 x 8.0 mm

A 2 ct oval is about 10 mm long, longer than a 3 ct round is wide. See carat size on the hand for photos by size.

Choosing the ratio and avoiding the bow-tie

About 1.30 to 1.40 looks full and soft. 1.40 to 1.50 is the most requested. Above 1.50 looks slim and long. Most ovals show a darker band across the middle called a bow-tie; a faint one is normal, a heavy one makes the stone look hollow. Judge it with the ring on your hand, under normal light.

Color and clarity for an oval

Every house ring is graded E color, VS1 clarity. In plain words: E is the second-whitest grade on GIA's D-to-Z color scale, so the diamond looks icy white even next to white paper. VS1 means the diamond has small inclusions that a trained grader finds with effort under 10x magnification; with the naked eye it looks clean.

Ovals can show slight color at the two ends. E color avoids that completely.

Lab vs natural oval

House inventory makes the gap easy to see: R-0074, a lab oval in 14K white gold, and R-0144, a natural oval of 5 ct total, are both priced at $5,200. For the same money, lab buys a larger or higher-grade stone, while natural buys rarity and resale value. Lab stones must be labeled lab-grown under FTC rules, and ours are. Who an oval suits

Ovals flatter almost every hand. They make short fingers look longer and wide fingers look slimmer, and they give the most visible size per carat of any classic shape. That is why many couples move from a round to an oval at the same budget: the stone looks a size bigger without paying for more weight.

Pairing a band with an oval

A straight band sits flush against a low oval solitaire. A halo or a high setting may leave a small gap, which a curved band can close. Match the band's metal and karat to the engagement ring so they wear evenly, and try the pair together before you buy either one.
