Emerald Cut Lab Diamond Engagement Rings: Step Cut, E Color, VS1

The short answer

An emerald cut has long, flat step facets that work like a hall of mirrors: calm flashes instead of busy sparkle. Because those open facets show inclusions and color more than brilliant cuts do, grade matters more here. Franky Diamonds' house emerald cuts are lab-grown, E color and VS1 clarity, in 14K gold from $1,700 to $6,800.

Why clarity matters more on an emerald cut

Brilliant cuts break light into many small flashes that hide small inclusions. Step cuts do the opposite: their long open facets let you look straight into the stone. That is why many jewelers advise VS2 or better for an emerald cut, while SI1 can work on a round. Our VS1 grade sits comfortably above that line, and E color keeps the large table from showing any warmth.

Every house ring is graded E color, VS1 clarity. In plain words: E is the second-whitest grade on GIA's D-to-Z color scale, so the diamond looks icy white even next to white paper. VS1 means the diamond has small inclusions that a trained grader finds with effort under 10x magnification; with the naked eye it looks clean.

Ratio and outline

Most emerald cuts fall between about 1.30 and 1.50. Around 1.40 is the classic look; longer stones read more modern and stretch the finger. The corners are cut off on purpose, which protects them from chipping. A 4 ct emerald cut measures roughly 10.5 by 7.8 mm, so on a size 6 finger (16.5 mm across) it covers close to half the finger's width.

Emerald vs radiant

Same outline, different personality. An emerald cut is calm and glassy; a radiant is busy and bright. If you like the elegance of an emerald but worry about seeing inclusions, a radiant is the safer pick. If you want the look that stands out from a room full of round diamonds, emerald wins.

Metal and setting

House emerald cuts come in 14K yellow and 14K white gold. White gold keeps the look cool and modern; yellow gold gives a vintage warmth. Four-prong settings show the most of the stone; corner prongs protect those cut corners. 14K gold is hard enough to keep prongs tight for years of daily wear.

Where the emerald cut comes from

The step cut was first used for emerald gemstones, which are brittle; cutting off the corners and using long, flat facets reduced the risk of chipping during cutting. Diamond cutters borrowed the shape, and it became a signature of Art Deco jewelry in the 1920s and 1930s. That history is why an emerald cut still reads as classic and formal, even in a modern setting.

Living with an emerald cut

  • Clean it often. The large flat table shows fingerprints and lotion more than a brilliant cut does.
  • Expect calm flashes, not glitter. Under restaurant lighting, an emerald cut shows broad bright and dark planes; that is the look.
  • Match a straight band. The rectangle sits flush against a straight wedding band, which makes stacking easy.
  • Check the corner prongs once a year.

Emerald cut in yellow or white gold

In white gold, an E color emerald cut looks like ice: clean, cool and architectural. In yellow gold it reads vintage and warm, and the contrast makes the white stone pop. Both work; choose by the metal you already wear every day.
