E Color VS1 Diamond Rings: Icy White and Clean to the Eye
E is the second-highest color grade on GIA's D-to-Z scale, meaning the diamond is colorless, and VS1 means small inclusions that a trained grader finds with effort under 10x magnification. Together they look icy white and clean to the naked eye. Every Franky Diamonds house ring is graded E color, VS1, from about $1,000 to $8,900.

E VS1 in one table
| Grade | Where it sits | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| D | Top color grade | Colorless |
| E | 2nd of 23 color grades | Colorless; only a grader comparing master stones sees a difference from D |
| F | 3rd | Colorless |
| G to J | Near-colorless | White once set; slight warmth next to an E |
| FL, IF | Top clarity grades | No inclusions at 10x |
| VVS1, VVS2 | Next two | Inclusions very hard to find at 10x |
| VS1 | 5th of 11 clarity grades | Minor inclusions, seen with effort at 10x; clean to the eye |
| VS2 to SI2 | Below | Often eye-clean, sometimes not |
Grades are from GIA's color and clarity scales.
Why E VS1 is the smart spot
D and VVS cost more for differences you cannot see on a hand. Grades below G and below VS2 save money but can show warmth or a visible inclusion, especially on large stones and step cuts. E VS1 sits where the stone looks perfect to the eye and you are not paying for numbers only a microscope can find. GIA itself notes that VVS and VS diamonds usually look the same without magnification.

Does grade matter more on some shapes
| Shape | Shows color | Shows inclusions | Is E VS1 overkill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round | Least | Least | No, but G VS2 would also look white |
| Oval, pear | At the ends | Little | No; E keeps the tips white |
| Radiant, cushion | In the corners | Little | No |
| Emerald, Asscher | Most | Most | No; step cuts need it most |
E VS1 in lab vs natural
In lab-grown diamonds, E VS1 is a common grade and priced within reach. In natural diamonds it is a high grade with a price to match. Our own case shows the gap: Round Lab Diamond Ring 4.62 ct, 14K Yellow Gold ($2,800) next to Round Natural Diamond Ring 4.25 ct, 14K Yellow Gold ($6,000), same color and clarity, very different prices. If someone offers natural E VS1 at a lab price, ask for the report.
How to check the grade you are paying for
- Ask whether the stone has a report from a lab such as GIA or IGI, and read the color and clarity on it.
- Check the report number against the lab's online lookup.
- Look at the stone under daylight and under warm light; E should stay white under both.
- Use a 10x loupe: on VS1 you may find a small inclusion after looking a while. That is normal.
E color VS1 at different sizes
At 1 carat, almost any well-cut stone from G VS2 up looks white and clean, so E VS1 is a comfort grade. At 3 carats and above, the top of the stone is wide enough that warmth and inclusions start to show, and E VS1 becomes the grade that keeps a big stone looking expensive. That is why our largest house rings, up to nearly 8 carats total, use the same E VS1 standard as the smallest.
Common mistakes when buying by grade
- Paying for D over E. The difference is invisible once the stone is set.
- Paying for VVS over VS1. GIA notes the two usually look the same to the naked eye.
- Ignoring cut. An E VS1 with a poor cut looks duller than a G VS2 with an excellent one.
- Comparing total weight to center weight. Grades on side stones are usually lower than on the center; ask which stone the grade describes.
