4 Carat Engagement Rings: Lab vs Natural at the Same Size

The short answer

A 4 carat round diamond is about 10.2 mm across, covering more than half the width of an average finger; pear and oval shapes at 4 carats look larger still. Franky Diamonds' 4 carat house rings are E color, VS1, with a 4.62 ct lab round at $2,800 and a 4.25 ct natural round at $6,000.

The clearest lab vs natural comparison we have

Two 4 carat rounds sit in the case right now, both 14K yellow gold, both E color, VS1:

RingStoneTotal weight
Round Lab Diamond Ring 4.62 ct, 14K Yellow Gold ($2,800)Lab-grown4.62 ct
Round Natural Diamond Ring 4.25 ct, 14K Yellow Gold ($6,000)Natural4.25 ct

The lab ring has more weight and costs less than half as much. Both look the same on the hand. The natural ring buys rarity and better resale. That is the whole lab vs natural decision in one table.

How big 4 carats looks

ShapeApproximate size at 4 ct
Round10.2 mm
Oval12.5 x 8.8 mm
Pear13.0 x 8.5 mm
Emerald10.5 x 7.8 mm
Cushion9.5 x 9.0 mm

On a size 6 finger, 16.5 mm across, a 4 ct round covers about 62% of the width. Elongated shapes run past the knuckle line and look bigger again. See carat size on the hand.

Grade and cut at 4 carats

Every house ring is graded E color, VS1 clarity. In plain words: E is the second-whitest grade on GIA's D-to-Z color scale, so the diamond looks icy white even next to white paper. VS1 means the diamond has small inclusions that a trained grader finds with effort under 10x magnification; with the naked eye it looks clean.

At 10 mm, the table is wide open to the eye, so color and clarity show more than at 1 or 2 carats. Cut drives how big the stone looks for its weight: a shallow, well-proportioned stone spreads wider; a deep one hides weight underneath.

Setting a 4 carat stone safely

Big stones sit high. Ask for six prongs or claw prongs that wrap the edge, and check them every six months for the first year. 14K gold is the right metal for this: harder than 18K, so prongs stay tight. Take the ring off at the gym and when lifting anything heavy.

Daily life with a 4 carat ring

  • Gloves and sleeves: a high setting snags knit and lace; a lower setting or bezel helps.
  • Gym and beach: take it off. Weights crush prongs, and sand and chlorine wear them.
  • Cleaning: weekly, with warm soapy water and a soft brush under the stone.
  • Insurance: schedule it on your policy. Every order we ship goes out insured, and an appraisal helps you set the coverage.

Lab 4 carats or natural 2 carats

For the price of one natural 4 ct ring, many buyers can choose a lab 4 ct ring and a pair of diamond earrings, or a natural stone around half the size. There is no wrong answer. Lab gives size and grade; natural gives rarity. The two rings at the top of this page make the trade-off real, and you can see both side by side in the showroom.

Shapes that make 4 carats look bigger

At the same weight, a pear or oval runs about 2 to 3 mm longer than a round is wide, so it covers more of the finger. An emerald cut looks smaller face-up than a round of the same weight because more of its weight sits in its depth, but its flat table makes the size easy to read. If your goal is the most visible stone for 4 carats, choose a well-cut oval or pear.

Size, paperwork and the showroom

All sales are final and resizing is not part of our published policies, so measure first. For a natural 4 ct stone, ask for the grading report; for lab stones, IGI reports are common.
