Every house ring is graded E color, VS1 clarity. In plain words: E is the second-whitest grade on GIA's D-to-Z color scale, so the diamond looks icy white even next to white paper. VS1 means the diamond has small inclusions that a trained grader finds with effort under 10x magnification; with the naked eye it looks clean.

A bigger stone has a bigger table, the flat top window. Through a 9 mm window, a warm tint or a dark inclusion is easier to spot than through a 6 mm one. E color and VS1 clarity keep a 3 ct stone looking white and clean in any light. Cut matters too: a poorly cut 3 ct stone can look smaller and duller than a well-cut 2.5 ct.

A 3 ct center sits higher and catches more knocks. Six prongs or a bezel give more security than four prongs; a low setting snags less on sleeves. 14K gold holds prongs firmly. Check prongs at least once a year.

Lab-grown is where most 3 ct rings are sold today, because a natural 3 ct at E VS1 costs many times more. Lab stones are labeled lab-grown, as FTC rules require. Natural 3 ct stones are a rarity purchase; for those, a GIA or IGI report is worth asking for.

A 3 ct ring is worth insuring. Ask your home or renters insurer about a scheduled jewelry rider; an independent appraisal and your receipt are what they usually ask for. In daily life, take the ring off for the gym, the beach and heavy lifting, and clean it every week or two: warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush under the stone, where lotion collects. A clean 3 ct stone looks a half carat bigger than a dirty one, because grime blocks light from entering the bottom of the stone.

Buyers often ask whether to buy a 3 ct stone at a lower grade or a 2.5 ct stone at a higher one. With lab-grown diamonds the question mostly disappears, because E VS1 at 3 ct is within reach. With natural diamonds, the size step usually wins visually: most people notice half a carat of size before they notice one color grade.
