What makes gold rose

Pure gold is yellow. Jewelers make rose gold by mixing it with copper, and sometimes a little silver. More copper means a deeper pink. The karat tells you how much pure gold is inside: 14K is 58.3% gold and 10K is 41.7% gold. That is why our 10K rose gold necklaces look a shade pinker than the 14K rings: less gold, more copper.

How rose gold wears

Copper makes rose gold hard, so it holds up well to daily wear. Unlike white gold, it is not plated, so there is no coating to wear off; the color goes all the way through. Clean it with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, and skip harsh chemicals like chlorine, which can attack the copper in the alloy. People with a known copper sensitivity should know the alloy contains copper. For the full metal story read how to choose a gold color.

Rose gold with a white diamond

An E color diamond is close to colorless, so against pink metal it looks crisp and bright. Rose gold also flatters most skin tones and stands out next to the yellow and white pieces most people already own. It mixes well when you stack: a rose gold ring next to a yellow band, or a rose necklace layered with a white gold chain.

Rings, necklaces or the bracelet

  • Rings: R-0098 and R-0100 are round lab rings; R-0099 mixes shapes. All three are 14K rose gold.
  • Necklaces: four 10K rose gold necklaces, round or mixed shapes, from $6,700 to $8,900.
  • Bracelet: B-0003, round lab diamonds in 14K rose gold.

The rose gold necklaces by weight

Each of the four necklaces is 10K rose gold with lab diamonds. N-0023 lists 6.15 carats for $6,700. N-0024 lists 4.24 carats and N-0030 lists 6.50 carats, both at $7,900. N-0033 lists a 6.00 carat weight at $8,900. Two necklaces at the same price can carry different weights, because stone size and design change the cost as much as the total. The lab diamond necklace buying guide explains how to compare them.

Stacking and mixing metals

Rose gold is the easiest metal to mix. A rose gold ring sits well next to a yellow gold band, and a rose necklace layers cleanly with a white gold chain. Keep the karat close when pieces rub together every day, so one does not wear the other down. For layering ideas, see how to layer chains.

Rose gold as a gift

Rose gold reads warm and personal, which is why buyers pick it for anniversaries, birthdays and push presents. A ring needs the right size, and all sales are final, so a necklace or the bracelet is the safer surprise. More ideas in jewelry gifts for her and anniversary jewelry gifts.
