Why round sparkles the most
A standard round brilliant has 57 or 58 facets laid out so light that enters the top bounces back out the top. It is also the only shape GIA gives a full cut grade, from Excellent down to Poor, because its proportions have been studied for decades. Cut does more for sparkle than color or clarity. A round with a strong cut and E color looks bright from any angle and hides small inclusions better than step cuts like the emerald. Read the diamond cut guide for what each grade means.
Round sizes in millimeters
| Carat weight | Approx. diameter | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ct | 6.4 to 6.5 mm | Classic, fits any finger |
| 1.5 ct | 7.3 to 7.4 mm | Clearly bigger across the room |
| 2 ct | 8.0 to 8.2 mm | Covers most of a slim finger |
| 3 ct | 9.2 to 9.4 mm | Statement size |
Our listed weights are totals, so a 3.18 carat ring like R-0120 includes side stones. Read the center and total columns together, and see what total carat weight means.
Gold color with a round stone
White gold makes an E stone look its iciest, which is why most of our rounds sit in 14K white. Yellow gold gives a warmer, vintage look; it can reflect a little warmth into the stone, but an E diamond stays white. Rose gold, on R-0098 and R-0100, is the softest look of the three. Compare the options in how to choose a gold color.
Round against oval
An oval of the same weight looks a bit bigger, because it spreads along the finger. A round gives more sparkle and no bow-tie. If you want the brightest stone, buy the round; if you want the most size per carat, look at the oval rings or read oval vs round.
Solitaire, side stones or a fuller setting
A round works in every setting style. A plain solitaire puts all the attention on the center. Side stones and pave bands add sparkle along the finger and raise the total weight, which is why several rings here list totals above 3 carats. Read the total and the center together before you compare prices. For the style trade-offs, see solitaire vs halo.
