What Is Total Carat Weight (ctw) and Why It Changes the Price

The short answer

Total carat weight (ctw) is the combined weight of every diamond in a piece of jewelry. A 2 ctw chain or pair of earrings can be dozens or hundreds of small stones, which costs far less than one 2 carat diamond, because diamond prices per carat rise steeply as a single stone gets bigger.

Carat vs ctw

A carat is a unit of weight: exactly 200 milligrams, or one-fifth of a gram. Jewelers split it into 100 points, so a 0.25 carat diamond is a "25 pointer." When a listing says carat (ct) for a single stone, it means that stone's weight. When it says total carat weight (ctw, sometimes "tw" or "ct. t.w."), it means every diamond in the piece added together.

Listing saysWhat it meansCould be
2 ct diamond ringOne center diamond weighing 2 caratsA 2.00 ct solitaire
2 ctw diamond ringAll diamonds in the ring add up to 2 caratsA 1.5 ct center plus 0.5 ct of side stones, or 40 stones of 0.05 ct each
1 ctw stud earringsBoth earrings togetherTwo 0.50 ct stones
10 ctw tennis braceletAll stones in the braceletAbout 100 stones of 0.10 ct, or 50 of 0.20 ct

The FTC's Jewelry Guides say it is deceptive to misrepresent diamond weight. They also say that if weight is given in points, the decimal carat weight should be stated too, and that decimals should be accurate to the last digit shown: a stone sold as ".5 carat" should weigh between 0.495 and 0.504. When a seller uses fractions like "1/2 carat," it should disclose that the weight is approximate and give the range.

Why many small stones cost less

Large rough diamonds are much rarer than small ones, so the price per carat climbs as a single stone gets bigger. Small diamonds (the trade calls stones under about 0.20 ct "melee") are plentiful and cost a small fraction per carat of a big center stone. That is why the same total weight can sit at very different prices.

You can see it in our own house pieces, all lab-grown diamonds:

PieceTotal carat weightPricePrice per carat of diamond
Round Lab Diamond Necklace 30 ct, 14K White Gold30 ctw$8,950about $298
Round Lab Diamond Bracelet 26.6 ct, 14K Rose Gold26.6 ctw$9,000about $338
Round Lab Diamond Necklace 18.48 ct, 14K Yellow Gold18.48 ctw$6,500about $352
Round Lab Diamond Bracelet 7.49 ct, 10K White Gold7.49 ctw$2,200about $294
Round Lab Diamond Ring 4.62 ct, 14K Yellow Gold4.62 ctw$2,800about $606

The ring has the least diamond weight on the list but the highest price per carat, because most of its weight is concentrated in a center stone. The necklaces and bracelets spread their weight across many smaller stones. Price per carat here includes the gold and labor too, so treat it as a comparison tool, not a diamond price quote.

With natural diamonds the gap is bigger again. One natural 5 carat stone costs many times what 5 carats of natural melee costs, because a natural 5 carat rough crystal is a genuinely rare find.

Reading ctw on iced jewelry

On iced chains, pendants, bracelets and watches, ctw is the number that tells you how much diamond you are actually buying. Three things to check alongside it:

  1. Stone size. Ask roughly what size the individual stones are. A 10 ctw tennis chain of 0.10 ct stones has about 100 stones of around 3 mm each. A 10 ctw chain of 0.03 ct stones has more than 300 tiny stones. Same ctw, very different look.
  2. Origin. Lab-grown or natural must be disclosed. Ctw alone tells you nothing about which.
  3. Quality range. Small stones are usually sold in color and clarity ranges rather than individual grades. A range like "G-H, VS" is far brighter than "I-J, I1."

Watch out for stone count dressed up as weight. "500 diamonds" sounds big, but if each is 0.005 ct, that is 2.5 ctw. And watch out for ctw that includes simulants: if a piece mixes diamonds with cubic zirconia or moissanite, the diamond weight should be stated separately.

Browse pieces where the ctw is printed in the name in our iced out jewelry collection. Bust-down and diamond-set watches use ctw the same way; see what a bust down watch is.

ctw on earring pairs

Earrings are where ctw confuses people most, because the number covers both ears. Divide by two to get the weight per earring.

Pair listed asPer earringRound stud diameter (approx.)
0.50 ctw0.25 ctabout 4.1 mm
1.00 ctw0.50 ctabout 5.2 mm
1.50 ctw0.75 ctabout 5.7 mm
2.00 ctw1.00 ctabout 6.4 mm

Cluster earrings add one more layer: the weight is split across many stones in each earring. Our Classic Round Cluster Earrings are 0.91 ctw for the pair at $1,620, so about 0.45 ct of diamonds per ear spread across a cluster that looks wider than a single 0.45 ct stone would.

Worked example: two tennis bracelets

Here is how to use ctw when two pieces look alike. Take two lab diamond bracelets from our showroom:

Bracelet ABracelet B
PieceRound Lab Diamond Bracelet 7.49 ct, 10K White GoldRound Lab Diamond Bracelet 3.96 ct, 14K Yellow Gold
Total carat weight7.49 ctw3.96 ctw
Gold10K white14K yellow
Price$2,200$6,000
Price per ctwabout $294about $1,515

Bracelet B has about half the diamond weight at almost three times the price. Ctw alone would call that a bad deal, which is exactly why ctw is a starting point and not the answer. The questions that explain a gap like this:

  • How big is each stone? Fewer, larger stones cost more per carat than many small ones.
  • How much gold is there, and what karat? 14K has 40% more gold per gram than 10K, and a heavier mounting adds metal weight.
  • What is the setting? Hand-set prong links take more labor than a simple channel.

Lay pieces side by side, compare ctw, then compare stone size and gold. When you can, look at both in person; the difference between 3 mm and 4 mm stones on the wrist is obvious in a second.

ctw on pendants and watches

Pendants and diamond-set watches usually mix stone sizes: a few larger stones as accents and many small ones as pavé. The ctw adds them all up, so the same number can mean very different pieces.

  • Pendants: ask whether there is a center stone and what it weighs on its own. A 3 ctw pendant with a 1 ct center is a very different object from a 3 ctw pendant of pavé alone.
  • Watches: ctw on a watch can cover the bezel, dial, lugs and bracelet. Ask where the stones are and whether they were set by the watch's maker or added afterward. Aftermarket stones are common on iced watches and should be disclosed as such.
  • Necklaces: on graduated tennis necklaces the stones get larger toward the front, so the visible stones carry more of the weight than the stones at the back of the neck.

Quick reference: stone size and count

Use this to picture a piece from its ctw. Diameters are approximate for round diamonds, from Stuller's millimeter-to-carat chart; stone counts are simple math.

Stone sizeApprox. diameterStones in 5 ctwStones in 10 ctw
0.02 ct1.7 mm250500
0.05 ct2.4 mm100200
0.10 ct3.0 mm50100
0.20 ct3.7 mm2550
0.25 ct4.1 mm2040

On a 7 inch tennis bracelet, about 178 mm long, 3 mm stones fit roughly 50 to a row once you allow for the metal between them. That is why a single-row bracelet of 0.10 ct stones lands near 5 ctw, and a 10 ctw single row needs stones closer to 4 mm.

How to compare two listings

When two pieces look alike but the prices are far apart, line them up on these points before you decide which is the better deal.

CompareListing AListing B
Total carat weightExact number, like 7.49 ctw"Up to 8 carats" or "approx."
Largest stoneStatedNot stated
Diamond originLab-grown or natural, in writing"Diamond" only
Color and clarity rangeStatedMissing, or only "VVS"
Gold karat and weight10K or 14K, with grams"Gold" only

Then divide price by ctw to get a rough price per diamond carat for each piece, and compare like with like: tennis to tennis, solitaire to solitaire, lab to lab. Clarity terms like VVS and VS change the number too; see VVS vs VS diamonds and the 4Cs guide.

Carat vs karat and other mix-ups

  • Carat (ct) is diamond weight. Karat (K) is gold purity. A "14K, 5 ctw" chain is 58.3% gold set with 5 carats of diamonds. More in carat vs karat.
  • Carat weight is not size. A deep-cut stone hides weight under the surface and looks smaller than a well-cut stone of the same weight.
  • ctw on a ring with a center stone can hide a small center. A "3 ctw" halo ring might have a 1.5 ct center. Ask for the center weight separately.
  • Laser inscriptions on larger single diamonds link the stone to its lab report, which records its exact weight. See diamond laser inscription.

Every glossary term used here is defined in the jewelry glossary. If you want a specific ctw built into a custom chain or pendant, we design it, show you the exact price, and only then make it: start a custom piece.

Questions people ask

What does 1 ctw mean?

It means all the diamonds in the piece weigh one carat combined. On stud earrings that is usually two 0.50 carat stones; on a ring or bracelet it can be many small stones adding up to one carat.

Is ctw the same as carat?

No. Carat is the weight of one diamond, while ctw is the total of every diamond in the piece. A 1 ct solitaire and a 1 ctw cluster ring have the same diamond weight but very different prices and looks.

Why is a 5 ctw chain cheaper than a 5 carat ring?

Because the chain spreads 5 carats across many small diamonds, which are plentiful and cheap per carat. A single 5 carat diamond is rare, so its price per carat is far higher, especially in natural diamonds.

How many points are in a carat?

One hundred. A 0.25 carat diamond is 25 points, and the FTC guides say a weight given in points should also be stated in decimal carats.
