The most common mistake on a man's pendant is a chain that is too thin. A pendant that is wider than the chain looks like it is about to fall, and it flips around. Use this as a starting point:

A heavy pendant comes with a wide bail made to slide over a Cuban. Small gold pieces have small bails for fine chains. Either way, check the bail opening against your chain width and the clasp, which is often the widest part. Franco and rope chains slide through smaller bails than a Cuban of the same width, which is why they are favorites for pendants.

On an iced pendant you should see diamonds, not metal. That is pavé setting: small stones set edge to edge across the surface. E color, the second-highest grade on GIA's scale, keeps the field white and even. VS1 clarity looks clean to the naked eye. The two-tone pieces use white gold under the stones and yellow gold as an accent, so they pair with either a yellow or white chain.
