What it costs
How Much Does a Custom Pendant Cost? The Four Lines on Every Quote
A custom pendant is priced from four lines: gold weight, total diamond carat weight, diamond origin (lab-grown or natural) and design and bench labor. Size drives the first two, so a bigger piece costs more on almost every line. In our catalog, small solid gold pendants start around $365, while fully iced natural diamond house pendants run $5,800 to $9,500.
Pendants in the showroom, with real prices
See allThe short answer in numbers
Nobody can quote a custom pendant without a design, because the price is built from the design. What we can show you is where real pieces land. These are pendants in our own catalog, so you can see how size, gold and stones move the number.
| Piece | Gold | Stones | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursive Gold Initials | 10K, about 0.7 g | None | from $390 |
| Classic Oval Locket | 10K, about 1.15 g | None | from $365 |
| Gold Heart Necklace | 10K, about 2.1 g | None | from $510 |
| Diamond Aura Pendant | 14K, about 0.61 g | 0.31 ct diamonds | from $565 |
| Mixed Natural Diamond Pendant (P-0004) | 10K two-tone | Natural diamonds, E color, VS1 | $5,800 |
| Mixed Natural Diamond Pendant (P-0003) | 10K two-tone | Natural diamonds, E color, VS1 | $9,500 |
A custom piece follows the same logic. A plain gold letter sits near the bottom of that table. A palm-sized pendant covered in natural diamonds sits at the top or above it. Everything in between depends on the four lines below.
How pricing works at Franky Diamonds
Our custom process has three stages. You bring the idea. We come back with the design and the exact price before anything is made. Then the piece is made and delivered, either with insured shipping or for pickup at the Miami showroom.
The important part for your budget is the middle step. You see the full price while the piece is still a drawing, so you can change the size, the karat or the stones and watch the number move before a single gram of gold is cast. If you want to understand every stage first, read how custom jewelry works step by step, or start the request on the custom page.
The four cost drivers on every custom pendant quote
Ask any jeweler to break a quote into these four lines. If they will not, you cannot compare quotes.
- Gold weight. Grams times karat times the day's gold price. A bigger, thicker, solid piece uses more grams.
- Diamond carat weight. The total weight of every stone, usually written as ctw. An iced pendant can carry anywhere from under 1 ct to 20 ct or more.
- Diamond origin and quality. Lab-grown or natural, plus color and clarity. The same carat weight can differ several times over in cost between the two origins.
- Labor. Design, 3D modeling, casting, polishing and, above all, stone setting. Setting hundreds of small stones by hand is slow, skilled work.
Small plain pendants are mostly labor. Large iced pendants are mostly diamonds. Heavy solid gold pendants with few stones are mostly metal. Knowing which kind of piece you want tells you where your money goes.
Gold weight: the melt-value math
Gold is priced per troy ounce, which is 31.1 grams. Around $4,074 an ounce in late October 2026, pure gold works out to about $131 a gram. Karat tells you how much of the alloy is pure gold: 10K is 41.7 percent, 14K is 58.3 percent and 18K is 75 percent.
| Karat | Pure gold | Gold value per gram | Melt value of 20 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10K | 41.7% | about $55 | about $1,093 |
| 14K | 58.3% | about $76 | about $1,527 |
| 18K | 75% | about $98 | about $1,965 |
That is melt value, the raw metal only. It is not a price. A finished pendant always costs more than its melt value because someone has to design, cast, finish and set it. Look at the small pieces in the first table: a 0.7 g cursive initial holds about $38 of gold yet sells from $390. On small pendants the craft is most of the bill. On a 30 g or 40 g solid piece, the gold line becomes a big share of the total, and a swing in the gold price shows up in your quote.
Size vs price: why bigger costs more on every line
Size is the lever that moves everything at once. Double the height of a flat pendant and you roughly quadruple its face area. More face means more gold for the same thickness, more room for stones, and more stones to set.
| Approximate height | How it reads | What grows |
|---|---|---|
| 10 to 15 mm | Dainty, sits on a thin chain | Mostly labor; little gold |
| 20 to 30 mm (about 1 inch) | Everyday statement | Gold and stones start to matter |
| 40 to 50 mm (about 2 inches) | Seen from across a room | Gold, carats and setting time all climb |
| 60 mm and up | Centerpiece, pairs with a heavy chain | Diamonds usually become the biggest line |
The chain also counts. A large pendant needs a chain strong enough to carry it, and a heavy Cuban link adds its own gold weight. See what a custom chain costs if you are budgeting the full look.
Lab vs natural diamonds: the biggest single swing
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds: the same carbon crystal, the same hardness, graded on the same color and clarity scales. They cost far less than natural stones of the same size, and their prices have fallen sharply since 2020. Natural diamond prices have also softened, but the gap between the two remains wide.
Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, a lab-grown stone must be clearly disclosed with words like "laboratory-grown" or "laboratory-created," and it may not be called "natural." Every piece in our catalog states the stone origin. On a custom quote, ask to see the origin written next to the carat weight.
When to pick which:
- Lab-grown when you want maximum size and coverage for the budget. On a heavily iced pendant the savings are largest, because the stone line is the biggest line.
- Natural when the origin itself matters to you, or the piece is meant to be passed down. Our natural house pendants, like P-0005 at $5,900 and P-0006 at $7,300, show what natural coverage costs in a finished piece.
Solid vs hollow back
A flat pendant does not need to be solid metal all the way through. Many large pieces are built with an open or hollowed back that removes gold from areas nobody sees, while the front and the stone seats stay full thickness.
Here is an example of why it matters. Say a 2-inch pendant modeled solid in 14K comes out at 40 g. Hollowing the back to 25 g removes 15 g, which at about $76 a gram of 14K is roughly $1,140 of gold. The front looks the same.
The trade-off is feel and strength. A solid piece has weight in the hand and resists dents. A hollowed piece is lighter on the neck, which many people prefer for a big pendant they wear every day. Ask for the gram weight of both versions on the render so you can choose with numbers.
Design: what the sketch and 3D render settle
The render is where most of the cost gets decided. It fixes the height, thickness and stone layout, and from that model the gold weight and the stone count can be calculated before anything is cast. That is how the exact price can come with the design.
Use the render to trim cost without losing the look: thin the frame a little, swap the smallest pavé for slightly larger stones (fewer stones, less setting time), or keep diamonds on the front face only. See what a CAD render shows for a full walk-through.
Choosing metal and karat for a pendant
A pendant does not take the beating a ring does, so softer, purer gold is less of a risk here than on your finger. Still, karat shifts the price on every gram.
- 10K is the most durable and the least expensive per gram. Most of our pendants and all of our chains are 10K.
- 14K has a richer color and is the common middle choice for fine jewelry.
- 18K is the most gold-rich and the most expensive per gram, and the softest of the three.
Color is a style call. Yellow, white and rose gold of the same karat cost about the same per gram. Two-tone designs, like several of our natural diamond house pendants, use color to separate the outline from the face.
Timeline and what changes it
The clock starts when you approve the design, not when you first ask. After that the stages are casting, finishing, stone setting and final polish. What slows a pendant down is predictable: sourcing a specific natural stone, a very large stone count, and design changes after approval. Simple plain gold letters move fastest.
The timing for your piece comes with your quote. For reference, other custom jewelers publish ranges such as about 3 to 6 weeks (Icebox) and about 4 to 8 weeks for most pendants (Avianne). If you have a date, say so on day one. Our full breakdown is on the custom timeline page.
Where custom pendant budgets usually go wrong
- Pricing the pendant and forgetting the chain. A 2-inch iced piece needs a chain that can carry it, and a heavy Cuban link can cost as much as the pendant.
- Chasing carat weight with tiny stones. Hundreds of very small stones add setting labor. Slightly larger stones can cover the same area with fewer settings.
- Paying for gold nobody sees. A solid back on a large flat piece is often wasted metal.
- Changing the design after approval. Changes on the render are cheap. Changes after casting are not.
How to compare two custom pendant quotes
Line the quotes up side by side and check five things:
- Gram weight of the finished piece, and the karat.
- Total carat weight, written as a number.
- Diamond origin, lab-grown or natural, in writing.
- Color and clarity range of the stones.
- Whether the price includes the chain, and the shipping method.
A cheaper quote with lighter gold, fewer carats or an unstated origin is not cheaper. It is a different piece. For ready-made options under budget, browse pendants under $1,000 or the full pendant collection.
Questions people ask
Why do custom pendant quotes vary so much?
Because two quotes for the "same" idea often describe different pieces. One may be thicker, heavier gold, 14K instead of 10K, natural instead of lab diamonds, or carry twice the carat weight. Ask every jeweler for gram weight, karat, total carat weight and stone origin in writing, then compare line by line.
Is lab diamond cheaper for a custom pendant?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond of the same size and grade costs far less than a natural one, and on an iced pendant the stones are usually the largest part of the price. Lab-grown stones are real diamonds and must be disclosed as laboratory-grown under the FTC Jewelry Guides.
Do you charge for the 3D design?
You see the design and the exact price before anything is made, and the quote spells out what you pay. Ask about the design step at the consultation so it is clear for your piece before you approve.
What is the cheapest way to get a custom pendant?
Keep it small, plain gold and 10K. On small pendants labor is most of the price, so a simple shape with clean lines costs less than a detailed one. Adding diamonds later is possible in design terms, but planning it from the start avoids rework.
Does the gold price change my quote?
On heavy pieces, yes. Gold is a real cost line, so a 40 g pendant reacts to gold price moves much more than a 2 g pendant does. Your quote reflects the price at the time it is made.
