Initial and Letter Pendants

Script letters flow and read as softer and more personal; they are the classic gift for a partner or a mother. Block letters read bolder and cleaner from a distance and are the usual pick on men's pieces and iced initials, because straight edges hold a row of diamonds evenly. If the letter will be iced, block or a heavy script holds stones best. A very thin script has nowhere to put a diamond. Two letters together, like a couple's initials, read better side by side on one bar than stacked on separate pendants.

A gold initial under an inch sits right on a 1 to 1.5 mm chain at 16 to 18 inches, on or just below the collarbone. The cursive gold initials have small bails made for fine chains. They will not slide over a wide Cuban or its clasp. On a custom iced initial, the bail is sized to your chain during design, so bring your chain or tell the shop its width. If you already own a heavy chain, design the initial around it, not the other way around.

An iced initial is gold with diamonds pavé-set across the face of the letter. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds and cost less per carat, which matters on a letter covered in small stones. Natural diamonds cost more and carry rarity. US rules require the origin to be disclosed either way.
