Custom Initial and Letter Pendants, Sized to Your Chain

The short answer

An initial pendant is the quickest custom piece to design: one or two letters in gold, plain or iced, sized to the chain it will hang on. Pick the letter style first, then match the letter height to your chain width, roughly 5 mm of letter for every 1 mm of chain. Our ready-made gold initials start from $365.

Why an initial is the easiest custom piece to get right

One letter is short, symmetrical in weight and easy to read. There is no spelling to check beyond the letter itself, no long plate to curve around your neck, and the design can be judged in one look at the render. That makes an initial the natural first custom piece, and a strong gift when you do not know someone's style.

It also scales well. The same letter can be a 10 mm charm on a fine chain or a 50 mm iced piece on a heavy Cuban link, and both read as the same idea.

How it works at Franky Diamonds

You tell us the letter, the style and the chain. We send back the design and the exact price before anything is made. After you approve, the pendant is made and delivered with insured shipping, or picked up at the Miami showroom.

If a standard letter already does the job, look first at our ready-made pieces: the Gold Initial Necklace from $365 and Cursive Gold Initials from $390, both in 10K gold. Custom makes sense when you want a different font, a bigger size, two letters combined, or stones. Start on the custom page.

Thin script letters look delicate but have narrow strokes. If you want stones in a script initial, it usually needs to be larger so each stroke can hold a row of pavé.

Size your initial to the chain

The most common mistake with a letter pendant is a mismatch: a tiny letter lost on a heavy chain, or a big letter tugging a thin one. A simple rule keeps proportions right: about 5 mm of letter height for every 1 mm of chain width.

Chain widthLetter height that balancesExample chain
Under 1.5 mm10 to 15 mmSingapore Chain 1mm, from $380
2 to 3 mm15 to 25 mmCable Chain 2mm, from $955
5 to 6 mm25 to 35 mmMiami Cuban Chain 5mm, from $4,260
8 mm and up40 to 50 mm or moreHollow Cuban Chain 8.5mm, from $4,870

Check the bail too. Its opening has to be wider than the chain, plus room to slide. A bail made for a 1 mm chain will not pass over a 5 mm Cuban.

Two initials: monogram, side by side or stacked

Two letters can be combined in three main ways:

  • Side by side: two letters joined at the base, like a short word. Easy to read.
  • Overlapping monogram: letters interlocked, one in front. More graphic, slightly harder to read.
  • With a symbol: two initials joined by a heart, ampersand, crown or cross. Common for couples and family pieces.

Overlapping letters need care on the 3D model so the front letter does not hide the back one. Ask for a render from straight on and from a slight angle; a monogram that reads well flat can turn into a knot at an angle.

The render settles size, depth and bail

A letter looks simple, but the render answers questions a drawing cannot: how thick the letter is from the side, whether it sits flat or tilts, where the bail joins, and how the stones sit if it is iced. Ask for the dimensions in millimeters and the gram weight. Then hold a ruler to your chest at that height. For more on what a render shows, see 3D renders and CAD.

Gold choices for a letter pendant

Our catalog initials are 10K, which is 41.7 percent gold and the most scratch-resistant of the common karats. 14K (58.3 percent) gives a deeper yellow. 18K (75 percent) is the richest color and the softest.

On a small letter the karat changes the price less than you might expect, because a 0.7 g initial carries only a few dollars more gold value in 14K than in 10K. The labor is the same either way. On a big iced letter weighing 20 g or more, karat becomes a real line on the quote.

Two-tone works well on initials: a yellow letter with a white gold outline, or white gold behind the stones so pavé looks whiter.

Stones on an initial: accent, outline or full ice

Three levels of sparkle:

  1. Accent: one stone or a small cluster on the letter. Adds a spark, keeps the price close to plain gold.
  2. Outline: a single row of stones tracing the letter's edge, with polished gold in the middle.
  3. Full ice: every surface set with pavé. The stone line becomes the biggest part of the price.

Lab-grown and natural diamonds both work. Lab-grown gives more coverage for the money; natural makes sense when origin matters to you. Either way, the FTC requires lab-grown stones to be disclosed as laboratory-grown, so the origin should be written on your quote.

Timeline for an initial

A plain gold initial is about as quick as custom work gets: model, cast, polish. Iced letters take longer because each stone is set by hand, and two-letter monograms may need an extra round of revisions to read cleanly. Your timing comes with the quote and starts at design approval.

What drives the price of a letter pendant

Height is the master switch. A 15 mm letter and a 45 mm letter in the same style are not three times apart in price; the bigger one has about nine times the face area, so far more gold and far more room for stones. After size come stone coverage, karat and the chain.

An initial is usually cheaper than a full name at the same letter height simply because it is one letter instead of five or six. If you are weighing the two, our custom name chains page and the custom pendant cost guide show how each line adds up. Browse ready-made letters in initial pendants.

Small letters are mostly craft, big letters are mostly material

Real numbers make this clear. Our Cursive Gold Initials weigh about 0.7 g of 10K gold. With gold near $4,074 an ounce in late October 2026, pure gold is about $131 a gram and 10K gold about $55 a gram, so that letter holds roughly $38 of gold. It sells from $390. The rest is design, casting, finishing and the work of making a tiny letter look crisp.

Now picture a custom block letter 45 mm tall and 3 mm thick. Even with an open back it can easily weigh 15 to 25 g. At 14K, about $76 a gram, that is roughly $1,150 to $1,900 of gold before a single diamond. Ice it, and the stone line can pass the gold line.

LetterGold weightGold value (melt)Where the money goes
Cursive initial, 10Kabout 0.7 gabout $38Craft and finishing
Gold Initial Necklace, 10Kabout 0.85 gabout $46Craft, plus the chain
Custom 45 mm block letter, 14K (example)15 to 25 gabout $1,150 to $1,900Gold first, then stones if iced

Melt value is the raw metal only, not a selling price. It explains why a small letter barely changes in price between 10K and 14K, while a large one does.

Initial pendant ideas that work

  • Your own first initial, the classic. Plain gold for daily wear, iced for nights out.
  • A partner's or child's initial, worn as a quiet tribute. Small script on a fine chain.
  • Stacked initials: two or three small letters on one chain, each its own pendant, so you can add one later.
  • Brand or crew letter: one bold letter in a shared style for a group. See matching crew chains.
  • Number instead of a letter: a jersey number, a birth year digit or a lucky number. Our Diamond Number Pendants start from $535.

Wearing and caring for a letter pendant

Letters with open shapes, like A, R and K, catch on knit sweaters and hair more than closed shapes like O and D. If you will wear it under clothes, round off sharp corners on the model. Clean the letter with warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinse and dry it. For iced letters, brush from the back as well so lotion does not build up behind the stones, and have the setting looked at if a stone ever moves.

Start your initial pendant

Send the letter or letters, a style reference, the chain width you will wear it on, plain or iced, and the gold color. With those five details the first render is usually close. Submit it through the custom request or come to the showroom to try sizes against your chain.

Questions people ask

Can I combine two initials?

Yes. Two letters can sit side by side, interlock as a monogram, or be joined by a heart, ampersand or cross. Ask to see the render straight on and at an angle so both letters stay readable.

What size initial pendant should I get?

Match it to your chain: roughly 5 mm of letter height for every 1 mm of chain width. That puts a 10 to 15 mm letter on a fine chain and a 40 to 50 mm letter on an 8 mm Cuban link.

Is an initial pendant cheaper than a name?

At the same letter height, usually yes, because it is one letter instead of several. A large iced initial can still cost more than a small plain gold name, so size and stones matter more than letter count.

Can my initial go on the chain I already own?

Yes, if the bail opening clears your chain. Tell us the chain width so the bail is modeled to fit.
