Men's Chain Length Guide (18 to 30 Inches)

The short answer

For most men a 20 inch chain sits at the collarbone, a 22 inch chain sits on the upper chest, and a 24 inch chain reaches mid-chest. Eighteen inches is a choker and feels short unless you asked for that. Twenty-six to 30 inches is for layering or a long pendant. Neck size moves the landing spot by an inch or two. On our Cuban listings the price stays the same at every length offered, so pick the landing spot instead of the cheapest inch.

Chains with real lengths to choose

How to picture the inches before you order

Chain length is the full loop, clasp closed, not the drop down the front. A 20 inch chain does not hang 20 inches down your chest. Half of it is behind your neck. The front drop is roughly half the length, minus a little because the neck takes its share. That is why 20 inches lands near the collarbone on most men and not at the navel.

Brilliant Earth and Blue Nile publish the same landmarks, and they are the ones we use because they match what we see when someone tries a chain on. They are landmarks, not a tailor's pattern. A thicker neck uses up more of the chain, so the front sits higher. A longer neck does the reverse. If you are between sizes, and the chain is 6 mm or wider, take the longer one. Wide links cover more skin, so they look shorter than a fine chain of the same inch count.

The chains in this catalog are not tagged as a men's size run. They are 10K gold chains, mostly unisex, and men wear them at these lengths. There are 46 of them, from a 0.6 mm Singapore chain at $290 to a 5 mm rope at $4,960. The men's chains edit is the style filter. The lengths below are the fit.

18 inches: high on the neck

Eighteen inches sits at the base of the neck for a lot of men, sometimes tight enough to feel like a choker. It works with an open collar when you want the chain seen and you do not want it on the chest. It is a poor length for a pendant, because the pendant crowds the throat.

Several of our chains offer it. The flat Cubans start at 16 inches and include 18. The solid Miami Cuban Chain 5mm includes 18 inches at the same $4,260 as the 26 inch. The 1.5 mm Cuban includes 18 and stops at 20, so 18 is one of only two choices on that $495 chain. Rope at 3 mm starts at 18 inches and runs to 28, at $2,175.

If you have never worn a chain, do not start at 18 unless you have measured. Men who guess "shorter is safer" often get a chain that sits above the collar of a t-shirt and looks like it shrunk. Twenty is the safer first guess.

20 inches: the collarbone

Twenty inches is the length most men mean when they say a normal chain. It rests at the collarbone, shows with an open collar, and hides under a closed one if the chain is fine. On a wider Cuban it still shows, because the links stand above the collar line.

Almost every serious chain we list can be 20 inches. That includes all eight Cubans, the 5 mm rope at $4,960, the 3 mm Franco at $3,425, and the 2 mm Franco at $1,655. The hollow Franco at 2.8 mm starts at 18 and also includes 20, at $1,425. If you buy one length and you do not own a chain yet, buy 20 for a fine or mid chain, and consider 22 if the chain is 6 mm or wider.

The 1.5 mm Cuban is a special case. Its only sizes are 18 and 20, both $495. There is no 22. If you need that thin Cuban lower on the chest, it is the wrong chain, not the wrong inch. Step to the flat 3.7 mm, which does offer 22 and 24 at $1,355.

22 and 24 inches: upper chest and mid-chest

Twenty-two inches moves the chain onto the upper chest. It is the length that still looks clean with a crew neck and gives a pendant room to breathe. Twenty-four inches reaches mid-chest. That is the pendant length, and it is also the length that layers under a 20 inch chain without the two sitting on top of each other.

LengthTypical landing spotBest useExamples that include it

26 inLower chestLong layer, big pendantSolid 5 mm Cuban, hollow 7.5 and 8.5 mm, 5 mm rope, 3 mm rope, hollow Franco, Franco 3 mm

The flat Cubans do not offer 26 inches. If you want a flat 5 mm at $1,880 past 24 inches, that length is not on the listing. The solid 5 mm and the hollow 7.5 and 8.5 do go to 26, at $4,260, $2,870, and $4,870. Same price as their shorter sizes. You are choosing fit, not a discount.

Is 24 too long? On a shorter man, 24 can land low and swing when you lean over. On a taller man it can look like 22 does on someone else. Measure. The method is in the next section. Width details that interact with these inches are in the width guide.

26 to 30 inches, and chains we do not stretch that far

Twenty-six inches is as far as most of our heavy chains go. The hollow Franco at 2.8 mm and the 3 mm rope go to 28 inches. We do not list a 30 inch chain in the Cuban group. A 30 inch chain is a style choice for someone layering three deep or wearing the chain under an open shirt on purpose. It is easy to buy and then never wear, because it feels like a lanyard until the rest of the stack is there.

If you want 30 inches in a width we do not cut that long, that is custom. Idea, design, exact price, and nothing is made until you agree. Do not assume a listed chain can be "just extended." Our pages sell the lengths in the variant list and no others.

A useful long chain we do list, if the goal is a lower line rather than a Cuban, is the 3 mm rope at $2,175 out to 28 inches. Rope wears differently. It twists, it shines more, and a pendant spins on it more easily than on a flat Cuban. Compare the patterns in types of gold chains.

Measure your own length with a string

  1. Take a piece of string, a charging cable, or a chain you already own.
  2. Hold it where a comfortable necklace would close, at the back of the neck.
  3. Bring the front down to the spot you want: collarbone, upper chest, or mid-chest. If a pendant is part of the plan, mark where the top of the pendant should be, not where the bottom tip should be. The pendant hangs below the chain.
  4. Mark the string, then measure that mark with a tape. That number is the chain length to order.
  5. If you land between two sizes we sell, round up for any chain 5 mm or wider.

A chain you already like is a better tool than a formula. Measure that one with the clasp closed and order the same inches in the new width. Changing width and length at the same time is how people miss twice.

Women's landmarks are different and they are not a smaller version of this chart. Sixteen and 18 inches do more work on that chart. Use the women's necklace length guide for those, and ring sizes only if you came here from a gift list and still need the other measurement.

Length by the kind of chain

Width changes the inch you want. So does the job.

  • Fine chains under 2 mm (Singapore from $290, box from $315, the 1.5 mm Cuban at $495) look right at 18 or 20. At 24 they can look like a misplaced cord unless something hangs on them.
  • Mid Cubans, 3.7 to 6 mm, look right at 20 or 22 worn alone, and at 22 or 24 with a pendant.
  • Wide hollow Cubans, 7.5 and 8.5 mm, usually need 22 or 24 so they do not choke the neck. Both are offered through 26 inches.
  • Rope and Franco read heavier than their millimeter because of the texture. A 3 mm Franco at $3,425 can start at 20 inches and still look like a complete chain. It does not need 26 inches to "work."

Prices for the men's side of the case, including pieces that are not chains, are gathered under men's jewelry and men's gold chains. The Cuban-only list is Cuban link chains.

Every shipment is insured. Report a manufacturing defect within 7 days. Sales are final, and a length you decided you do not like is not a defect. Measure before you check out. Questions people ask

What is the most popular chain length for men?

Twenty to 22 inches. Twenty sits at the collarbone on most men. Twenty-two drops to the upper chest and is the better pick when the chain is wide. Our Cubans, ropes, and Francos all offer those lengths, and on the Cubans the price does not change with the inch you choose.

Is 24 inches too long?

Not if you want the chain at mid-chest or you are hanging a pendant. It is too long if you wanted a collarbone chain and you did not measure. On a shorter neck, 24 inches can swing. When you are between 22 and 24, try a string at both spots before you order.

What length chain for a pendant?

Start at 22 inches for a modest pendant and 24 inches for a larger one, so the pendant sits on the chest instead of in the collar. The chain still has to fit the bail. Our flat Cubans go to 24 inches. The solid 5 mm and the wide hollows go to 26.
