Custom Cross and Religious Pendants in Gold and Diamonds
Custom faith pieces, from simple gold crosses to iced crucifixes and saint medallions, are among the most personal pendants a jeweler builds. Size the piece to the chain it will hang on, about 1 inch of cross for a 3 to 4 mm chain and 2 inches or more for an 8 mm Cuban link, then choose plain gold, full ice or a mix of both.

How a custom faith piece works at Franky Diamonds
You share the idea and any reference images. We send back the design and the exact price before anything is made. After your approval, it is made and delivered with insured shipping, or picked up at the Miami showroom.
With religious imagery, details carry meaning: the number of rays on a Guadalupe medal, the wording on a saint's medal, the style of the corpus on a crucifix. Point out the details that matter to you in the request so they are kept exact on the model. Start on the custom page.
Sizing a cross to your Cuban link
A cross that is too small for its chain looks like an afterthought. A cross too big for a thin chain pulls it into a V. Use the chain width to set the size.
| Chain width | Cross height that balances | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 mm | 15 to 25 mm | Quiet, everyday, under or over a shirt |
| 3 to 4 mm | 25 to 35 mm (about 1 to 1.4 inches) | Visible, classic |
| 5 to 6 mm | 35 to 50 mm (about 1.4 to 2 inches) | Statement on a Cuban or rope |
| 8 to 10 mm | 50 to 65 mm (about 2 to 2.5 inches) | Bold, iced pieces |
| 12 mm and up | 65 mm and larger | Centerpiece |
Width matters as much as height. A slim cross reads smaller than its height suggests, and a chunky cross reads bigger. Ask for both measurements on the render, and check the bail clears your chain. For ready chains to pair with a cross, our Miami Cuban Chain 5mm starts from $4,260 and our Rope Chain 3mm from $2,175, both 10K.
Plain gold, iced, or a mix
Mixing gold and diamonds is what makes a custom faith piece look designed rather than off the shelf. Common combinations:
- Iced outline, polished center. A single row of stones traces the cross; the middle stays mirror gold.
- Polished outline, iced center. The reverse, which makes the stones look framed.
- Two-tone crucifix. A yellow gold figure on a white gold cross, with or without ice on the cross.
- Iced halo or rays. On a Marian medal or Jesus piece, stones only on the halo, crown or border.
- Center stone. One larger diamond where the arms of the cross meet.
Every mix trades sparkle against cost. Ice on the outline gives a lot of flash for a modest stone count; full pavé on a large cross can multiply the stone line. For how pavé is held, read how diamonds are set in iced out jewelry.
Adding a name, date or verse
Faith pieces often carry words. The usual places:
- The back, engraved: a name, a baptism or confirmation date, a verse reference like "Psalm 23."
- A banner across the front or the base of the cross, in gold or iced letters.
- The border of a medallion, with the saint's name or a short prayer around the edge.
Short words engrave better than long sentences at pendant size. A verse reference reads; a full verse on a 30 mm cross does not.
Ready-made faith pieces in our catalog
If a simple piece is what you need, these are in stock as made-to-order catalog pieces, with prices starting at the base metal option:
- Gold Cross Pendant, 10K, about 1.5 g, from $430
- Gemstone Cross Pendant, 10K, about 28 by 14 mm, from $480
- Rosary Chain with Cross Charm, 14K, 16 inches, from $495
- Rosary Gold Bead Chain, 14K, with a cross and Miraculous Medal, from $530
- Rosary Bracelet, from $430, and the Gold Cross Bracelet, from $420
Custom makes sense when you want a larger size, a specific saint or image, two-tone work, or diamonds. More options are in cross pendants.
The render protects the details that matter
A cross is simple geometry, but a crucifix figure, a saint's face or a Guadalupe medal is sculpture. The 3D render is where you check proportions, the expression of a face and the depth of the relief. Ask for close views of the faces and a side view. Small changes are easy on screen and impossible after casting. More on this in 3D renders and CAD.
Gold and karat for a faith piece meant to last
Many faith pieces are worn every day for decades and handed down. 10K gold (41.7 percent pure) is the most durable for daily knocks. 14K (58.3 percent) balances color and strength and is the usual fine-jewelry choice. 18K (75 percent) gives the richest yellow and suits heavier, thicker pieces where softness is less of a concern.
A cross is mostly metal, so size and thickness drive the gold line. A 50 mm solid cross can carry many grams of gold; an open back keeps the front full while cutting weight on larger pieces.
Lab or natural diamonds on a cross
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds and cost far less than natural ones of the same size, so they let you ice more of the piece. Natural diamonds suit an heirloom cross meant for the next generation. The FTC requires lab-grown stones to be disclosed as laboratory-grown, so ask to see the origin written on your quote. Our natural diamond house pendants, like P-0005 at $5,900, give a sense of what natural coverage costs. Full comparison: lab vs natural diamonds.
Faith pieces for milestones
| Occasion | Typical piece | Sizing tip |
|---|---|---|
| Baptism or christening | Small gold cross or medal, often kept until the child is older | 10 to 15 mm on a fine chain; engrave the date on the back |
| First communion | Cross or Miraculous Medal | 15 to 20 mm; plain gold or a single accent stone |
| Confirmation | Saint medal of the confirmation saint | 20 to 25 mm; the saint's name around the edge |
| Quinceañera | Cross, Marian medal or a medal with her initial | 20 to 30 mm, often with diamonds |
| Wedding | Matching crosses or a couple's medal | Two sizes of the same design |
For a child's piece, think about growth. A pendant sized for an adult chain lets a small cross be worn for years, then moved to a longer chain later.
What the gold in a cross is worth
Gold near $4,074 an ounce in late October 2026 means about $131 a gram for pure gold, or about $55 a gram in 10K and $76 in 14K. A light catalog cross like the Gold Cross Pendant holds about 1.5 g of 10K, roughly $82 of gold. A custom 50 mm cross, 3 mm thick, can easily weigh 12 to 20 g, which is about $900 to $1,500 of 14K before any stones or labor. That is melt value only, not a selling price, but it shows why size changes the quote so much.
Caring for a cross you wear every day
Crosses with sharp points catch on knits and car seat belts. Ask for slightly rounded tips on the model if you wear it under clothes. Clean it with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, working gently around any stones and behind the figure on a crucifix where lotion collects. Take it off before the pool, the ocean and the gym. If a stone ever moves or a prong catches on fabric, stop wearing the piece and have the setting checked.
Timeline and price for a custom cross
Plain gold crosses are among the quicker custom builds. Sculpted pieces, like a crucifix figure or a saint's face, need more modeling. Full pavé adds hand setting, and natural stones can add sourcing time. If the piece is for a baptism, first communion, confirmation or wedding, give the date at the start; the timing for your piece comes with the quote.
Price follows size, stone coverage, karat and the amount of sculpted detail, in that order for most faith pieces. Our custom pendant cost guide shows the gold math.

Questions people ask
Can you add a name or date to a cross?
Yes. The back is the usual place for an engraved name, baptism date or verse reference. Names can also sit on a banner across the front in gold or iced letters.
What size cross looks right on a Cuban?
Match the cross to the chain width: about 35 to 50 mm on a 5 to 6 mm Cuban, and 50 to 65 mm on an 8 to 10 mm Cuban. A cross smaller than that tends to disappear against a heavy link.
Can I mix gold and diamonds?
Yes, and it is the most popular custom look: an iced outline with a polished center, a two-tone crucifix, or diamonds only on a halo or rays. Mixing also keeps the stone count, and the price, under control.
Can you copy a family medal?
A family medal or old cross can be used as the reference for a new piece, in a new size or with stones added. Bring it or send clear photos from the front, back and side.
