Bracelet Size Guide

The short answer

Measure the wrist with a soft tape just below the wrist bone, snug against the skin, in inches. Add about half an inch for a bracelet that stays put, or about an inch for one that moves and can share the wrist with a watch. Ready-made lengths often land at 6.5 to 7 inches for women and 8 to 8.5 inches for men. Those are common lengths, not your wrist. A wider bracelet needs more length than a thin one, because thick links eat room inside the circle.

How to measure the wrist

Use a tailor's tape, or a strip of paper you will measure with a ruler afterward. String that stretches will read long.

  1. Wrap at the spot just below the wrist bone, toward the hand, where a bracelet actually sits. Measuring higher, on the forearm, is how people order an inch too big.
  2. The tape should be snug, the way you want the bracelet's inside to feel, not cinched and not hanging off.
  3. Read inches and the fraction. 6.75 is a real number. "About 7" is how clasps land on the wrong side of the wrist bone.
  4. Measure both wrists if you always wear a watch on one of them. They are not always the same.
  5. Write the number down. Then decide snug or loose before you add anything.

If you are between tools, a piece of paper marked and laid on a millimeter ruler works. 1 inch is 25.4 mm. A 7 inch wrist is about 178 mm. Do the addition in one unit, not a mix of inches and "a bit."

Snug, easy and loose

FitAdd to the wristHow it behaves
SnugAbout 0.5 inch (12 to 13 mm)Stays on the wrist bone. Does not spin. Harder to get over the hand.
EasyAbout 0.75 inchSlides a little. The usual daily fit for a link bracelet.
LooseAbout 1 inch (25 mm)Moves freely. Room for a watch, or for a bracelet you pull on without a fight.

A hand is wider than the wrist. The bracelet has to pass the hand. If your hand is much wider than your wrist, a "perfect" snug measurement will not go on. In that case add length, or choose a drawstring. The Gold Drawstring Bracelet at $430 tightens after it is on, so the fixed-length problem goes away. That is one reason it exists.

Common ready-made lengths are a shopping shortcut, not anatomy. Many women's link bracelets are made around 6.5 to 7 inches. Many men's are made around 8 to 8.5 inches. If your tape says 7.5, do not buy a 7 because a chart called 7 normal.

Width changes the length you need

A thin rope or a paperclip sits like a line. A wide, stiff row sits like a bangle with a clasp. The inside of a wide bracelet is smaller than the outside measurement suggests, and the height of the links presses into the wrist. On anything much wider than a fine chain, add about a quarter to a half inch beyond the snug number you would use for a thin bracelet.

That half-inch bump for wide links is common retail practice. It is not a Franky bench rule printed on these products, and the live bracelet titles do not include a Cuban bracelet to demonstrate it. The closest plain link under the diamond pieces is the Curb Chain Bracelet at $315, which is narrow. Narrow means you can trust the plain tape-plus-half-inch method. The wide-link version of the same idea is written up in Cuban link bracelet sizing.

Tennis bracelets in the trade are sized close, often snug, because a loose tennis line flips and shows the clasp. This catalog does not currently title a tennis bracelet. If you are studying that fit for later, use snug plus a safety clasp in your notes, and shop tennis bracelets only when the filter shows live pieces. Diamond bracelets that do exist are on diamond bracelets.

Clasps, links and what is in the case now

A clasp adds length. On some bracelets the clasp is inside the measured length. On some it is extra. The listings do not print either fact. Look at the photo and ask if you are within a quarter inch of a size.

Link bracelets in the wider trade can drop or add a link. That is bench work. It is not listed as a Franky service. Do not order a too-long bracelet on the assumption someone will shorten it. The drawstring and the pieces that already match your tape are the clean path. The bracelet wall is bracelets, and Cuban bracelets as a collection are Cuban link bracelets. Chain length for the neck, which is a different measurement, is the men's chain length guide.

  • Curb, rope, paperclip, twisted: thin 10K gold, $260 to about $400. Size them like a fine bracelet.
  • Cross, rosary, evil eye: a charm changes where the weight sits, not the wrist number.
  • Lab diamond lines: stiff and tall. Size the circle, and give them room. They are not in the under-$1,000 group.

A number you can reorder from

Write three things: wrist inches, the fit you want, and whether a watch lives on that wrist. "7 inch wrist, easy fit, no watch" is an order. "Kinda small" is not. Rings are a different body part. If you are sizing both, the ring size chart does not convert into a bracelet length. Do not try.

Try a bracelet on if the piece is stiff or wide. The showroom is at 7900 NW 27th Ave, Unit 506, Miami FL 33147. Phone 954-504-5640. Orders ship insured. If a manufactured bracelet arrives the wrong length because the listing was unclear, call within the 7-day window for a manufacturing defect and describe it. A size you chose wrong is not a defect. All sales are final.

Questions people ask

What size bracelet should I get?

Measure the wrist just below the bone, then add about half an inch for snug or about an inch for loose. Many ready-made women's bracelets are 6.5 to 7 inches and many men's are 8 to 8.5, but your tape beats those ranges. A drawstring bracelet avoids a fixed length.

How loose should a bracelet be?

Loose enough to pass the hand and sit without cutting in, tight enough that it does not slide over the hand when you point your fingers down. For most link bracelets that is wrist plus 0.5 to 0.75 inch. Add more if you wear a watch on the same wrist.

Can a bracelet be shortened?

Some link bracelets in the trade can have a link removed by a bench. That service is not listed in Franky's published policies. Order the length that matches your tape, or choose a drawstring, instead of planning on a later shorten.
