Stud Earrings

The short answer

Stud earrings sit flat on the lobe with no drop, which is why they are the pair people forget they are wearing. In this catalog that means two different products. Solid gold balls and puffy studs run from $260 to $390 in 10K. Diamond solitaires and lobe clusters run from $349 into the thousands. A 3 mm gold ball and a diamond solitaire are both studs. They are not the same purchase.

Studs and gold balls

Gold balls and puffy studs, sized in millimeters

The plain gold studs tell you the diameter. That is the whole spec that matters.

PieceSizePrice
Classic Ball Earrings Small3 mm$260
Classic Ball Earrings Medium5 mm$275
Classic Ball Earrings Large7 mm$315
Small Diamond Cut Ball Earrings5 mm$300
Medium Diamond Cut Ball Earrings7 mm$325
Large Diamond Cut Ball Earrings10 mm$390
Puffy Heart StudsFlat heart$325

Diamond-cut, again, is a faceted gold surface. The 10 mm ball flashes more than the smooth 7 mm ball. It is still solid gold, not a diamond. Puffy Bar Studs and Puffy Flower Studs are the same $325 as the heart. All of these are 10K. A 3 mm ball is the pair you can sleep in if the backing is snug. A 10 mm ball is a look.

Diamond versions of the stud idea start at diamond stud earrings.

Diamond studs and clusters in the same group

The catalog tag for studs also pulls diamond earrings that sit on the lobe: Flora Earrings at $349, Spark Diamond Solitaire Earrings at $740, Opera Diamond Solitaire Earrings at $1,000, plus clusters, butterflies and a few hoops that share the tag. Read the title. A hoop is not a stud even if a tag says so.

CTW, total carat weight, is how diamond studs are discussed in the trade. A 1 ctw pair is about 0.50 carat per ear. Ritani's stud guide puts a lot of first purchases between 0.50 and 1 ctw. Our titles do not print ctw. Ask, or use the diamond stud earrings guide for the size logic, then match it to a listing that actually states weight. Until it states weight, do not invent one from the dollar price.

The 1 carat search has a page of its own: 1 carat diamond studs. Men's lobe pieces are clusters more often than solitaires: men's diamond earrings.

Backings and which stud stays put

A push back grips by friction. A screw back threads down and locks. Gold balls at 3 mm and 5 mm are normally worn on a friction back. A solitaire at $740 or $1,000, and any cluster with height, should lock with a screw if you wear it daily. The product data does not name the backing. That question is worth a phone call. The comparison page is screw back vs push back.

Posts should match the earring's gold. A gold front on a mystery post is how ears turn green. These are filed as 10K or 14K gold. 10K is 41.7 percent gold and harder. 14K is 58.3 percent. White gold in the trade is often alloyed with nickel, which is the common sensitivity. Yellow 14K is the calmer start if your ears have complained before. We do not label a stud nickel-free.

One pair for work, and the parent case

The useful everyday set is a 3 mm or 5 mm gold ball plus one diamond pair you like in a mirror. The ball disappears in a photo and still reads as finished in person. The diamond pair does the opposite. You do not need six studs. You need a backing that locks and a size you stop noticing.

All earrings, drops included, are on the earring page. Men who want scale without a hoop should read the men's earrings guide before they order a 3 mm ball and feel underdressed, or order a jumbo cluster and feel overdressed.

Clean studs with warm water. Check the back of the lobe for soap film, which is what makes a post smell, not the gold itself. Take them out for the pool. Insured shipping on orders. Showroom: 7900 NW 27th Ave, Unit 506, Miami FL 33147. Phone 954-504-5640. Manufacturing defects have a 7-day window. All sales are final.

Questions people ask

What does ctw mean on earrings?

CTW is total carat weight across the pair. It matters for diamond studs and does not apply to gold ball studs. A 1 ctw diamond pair is about half a carat per ear. Our gold balls are sized in millimeters instead, from 3 mm to 10 mm.

Are these stud earrings good for everyday wear?

Yes. Flat studs are the everyday shape. The 3 mm and 5 mm gold balls are the ones people wear without thinking. Diamond solitaires are daily wear too if the backing locks. Take any of them out for swimming.

Do you sell single earrings or pairs?

Listings are pairs unless the title says otherwise. For one ear, call 954-504-5640 and ask about the specific stud. The price is for the listing as shown.
