Diamond Drop Earrings: Movement and Sparkle Below the Lobe

The short answer

Drop earrings hang below the earlobe from a stud, hoop or huggie, so they move as you do and throw more sparkle than a fixed stud. They suit events, dinners and photos. Franky Diamonds' drop styles include teardrop pavé studs in 10K gold from $585 and diamond drop huggies in 14K gold.

Drop huggies are the practical version: the top hugs the lobe and a small diamond element hangs below. Teardrop pavé pieces give the drop shape without swinging.

How long a drop to choose

Length changes the look more than carat weight does.

  • Under 15 mm total: works at work and every day.
  • 15 to 30 mm: dinners and events, shows with hair up.
  • Over 30 mm: formal, best with a bare neckline.

Shorter necks and round faces usually look best with drops that stop above the jaw. Long necks carry longer drops. If you also wear a necklace, keep one piece the focus; the necklace length guide shows where each length falls.

Weight, backs and comfort

A drop pulls down on the piercing. Keep heavy drops for a few hours at a time. On posts, a screw back or a large-disc back holds the earring level so it faces forward. Drop huggies avoid the issue because the hinge holds them in place.

Lab vs natural, and gold

Drop earrings use diamonds of every origin. Our listings state stone and weight; the FTC requires lab-grown stones to be labeled. The teardrop pavé pieces here are 10K gold, the toughest common karat; the drop huggies are 14K. Both are made to order in yellow, white or rose gold.

Why there are only a few drops

Our earring range leans toward studs, huggies and hoops, the pieces people wear every day. Drop styles are the smaller group. If you want a specific drop, for example a pear diamond hanging from a stud or a longer line of diamonds, it can be made through custom: you share the idea, we design it and give you the exact price before anything is made, then we make it and deliver it.

Drop shapes and what they do

Pear and teardrop shapes are also the most common drop for brides, because they mirror a pear engagement ring.

Diamond weight on a drop

On drops, a little weight goes a long way, because movement makes small diamonds flash more than they would on a fixed stud. A drop huggie with about 0.44 carat per ear looks livelier than a still stud of the same weight. Put your budget into the moving part of the earring, not the top, and you get more sparkle for the same money.

Want to see a drop move

Drop earrings are hard to judge from a photo, because the point is how they move. You can try them on at our Miami showroom, 7900 NW 27th Ave, Unit 506. Call 954-504-5640 before you come so the pieces are ready. All online orders ship insured, and all sales are final, so if you are unsure about length, seeing the piece first is worth the trip.

Drops for weddings and events

For a bride, a drop earring should finish the look without fighting the veil or the neckline. Short drop huggies work under a veil; teardrop pavé studs work with an updo; long linear drops need a strapless or open neckline. For guests, keep the drop shorter than the necklace is long, so the two do not crowd each other. When in doubt, choose the shorter drop: it photographs cleanly from every angle.

Care and pairing

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and check that the hanging part moves freely after cleaning. Store drops flat so the joints do not kink. For daily pairs, see women's diamond earrings and the stud guide; for hoop sizes, the hoop size guide; for shopping for someone else, gifts for her; and the full range at all earrings.

Questions people ask

What does ctw mean on earrings?

Total carat weight of the diamonds in the pair, including the hanging element. A 0.88 ctw drop huggie pair has about 0.44 carat per ear.

Are these diamond drop earrings good for everyday wear?

Drop huggies are. Longer drops are better for events, because they pull on the piercing and can catch on scarves and hair.
