Hoop Earring Size Guide: 10 mm to 45 mm, Measured and Priced

The short answer

Hoop size is the diameter in millimeters. Hoops of 10 to 15 mm hug the earlobe (huggies), 18 to 30 mm is the everyday range, and 40 mm and up reads as a statement hoop. Thickness changes the look as much as diameter: a 3 mm tube looks fine and light, a 5 mm tube looks bold even at 20 mm.

Hoop sizes at a glance

Hoop size is the diameter of the circle, given in millimeters. A 20 mm hoop is 20 mm across, about the width of a US nickel (21.2 mm). Here is how each size band wears on an average adult earlobe, with real pieces from our showroom catalog.

Notice the price curve on plain gold hoops: going from 10 mm to 40 mm in our 10K Classic line only moves the price from $270 to $400, because a thin tube of gold does not add much metal as it gets wider. Diamond hoops are a different story, covered below.

How hoops are measured

Jewelers measure a hoop straight across the circle. Most listings, ours included, put that diameter in the product name, so "Medium Diamond Cut Hoops 19mm" means a 19 mm circle. Two details trip people up:

  • Outside vs inside diameter. Most sellers quote the outside edge. On a thick hoop the inside opening is smaller by twice the tube width, so a 20 mm hoop with a 4 mm tube leaves a 12 mm opening.
  • Diameter vs drop. A hinged hoop hangs from the piercing, so how far it drops below the lobe is roughly the diameter minus the distance from your piercing to the bottom of your lobe (often 5 to 8 mm).

To check a size at home, hold a ruler under your piercing and mark the number where you want the hoop to end. A coin works too: a dime is 17.9 mm, a nickel 21.2 mm and a quarter 24.3 mm across (US Mint specifications). If you are buying for someone else, look at hoops they already wear and match the diameter printed on them, or measure one flat on a table.

Ring sizes use a separate system; if you are sizing a ring at the same time, use our ring size chart.

Huggies: 10 to 15 mm

A huggie is a small, usually thick hoop that wraps tight to the lobe. Because there is no swing, huggies are the size people sleep in, work out in and stack in a second or third piercing. They also suit men who want something cleaner than a stud.

In plain gold, our Mini Classic Hoops 10mm and Medium Classic Hoops 12mm are both $270 in 10K. Diamond huggies cost more because the stones do: the Diamond Drizzle Huggies are $730, the Diamond Orbit Pave Huggies $1,990 and the Diamond Trinity Huggies (0.73 ctw) $1,835. One fit note: on a thick or low-set lobe, a 10 mm huggie can feel tight. If the hole sits more than 8 mm above the bottom of your lobe, start at 12 to 15 mm.

Everyday hoops: 18 to 30 mm

This is the range most people mean when they say "gold hoops." An 18 to 24 mm hoop drops just past the lobe, shows from the front and still clears a collar or a phone at your ear. Go to 30 mm when you want them noticed across a room but still wearable to work.

"Diamond cut" here means the gold surface is cut into small facets that flash in light. It has nothing to do with diamond stones. That is why a diamond-cut gold hoop costs a few hundred dollars while a hoop set with real diamonds costs over a thousand. See the whole gold hoop earrings collection for every finish.

Statement hoops: 40 mm and up

At 40 mm a hoop reaches the jawline on most faces and becomes the main event of the outfit. Our Massive Classic Hoops 40mm ($400) and Super Jumbo Diamond Cut Hoops 45mm ($640) are the largest plain gold hoops in the catalog.

Three things to know before going big:

  1. Face shape. Large round hoops soften a square or angular jaw. On a round face, a hoop that ends above the jaw (30 to 35 mm) often looks more balanced than one that sits on it.
  2. Hair. Long, loose hair catches on 40 mm+ hoops. Many people save them for hair up or slicked back.
  3. Weight. Size alone does not make a hoop heavy. A hollow or slim tube 45 mm hoop can weigh less than a solid 20 mm huggie with a thick profile.

Thickness and weight change the look

Two hoops with the same diameter can look completely different. Tube width (the thickness of the gold from front to back) decides whether a hoop reads delicate or bold.

Tube widthLookBest with

2.5 to 3.5 mmClassic gold hoopMost sizes from 15 to 40 mm
4 to 6 mmChunky, boldHuggies and 20 to 30 mm hoops

Construction drives weight. Hollow hoops, like our Bella Hollow Hoops Small ($530) and Bella Hollow Hoops Large ($695), use a gold tube with air inside, so they can be big and thick without pulling the lobe down. The tradeoff is the same as with hollow chains: a hard knock can dent a hollow tube, and a dent in a thin tube is hard to fix cleanly. Solid hoops are heavier per millimeter but shrug off knocks.

If big hoops have ever stretched or ached your lobe, choose hollow or slim tube in sizes above 30 mm, and keep solid gold for huggies.

Diamond hoops vs plain gold hoops

Diamonds change the price math. In plain gold, the price rises slowly with size. In diamond hoops, price follows total carat weight (ctw, the combined weight of all the stones), and a larger hoop simply has more stones on it.

For diamond hoops, smaller diameters (15 to 25 mm) are the sweet spot. The stones face forward where people see them, and the hoop does not swing into things that knock stones loose. Inside-out styles put diamonds on the inner face too, so the hoop sparkles from the side as well as the front.

Closures and stacking by piercing

How a hoop closes affects comfort and how safely it stays on, and it matters more as hoops get bigger.

ClosureHow it worksGood for
Hinged snap (click-top)A hinged section swings shut and clicks into the tubeHuggies and everyday hoops; easy one-hand on and off
Latch backA wire post passes through the lobe and a hook or lever locks behind itMedium and large hoops where a secure catch matters
EndlessA thin wire end slides into the hollow tubeVery light, slim hoops; the lightest feel, the fussiest to close
Push-lock claspThe post pushes into a locking catchFine hoops set with stones, like our Blush Princess Hoops ($1,095)

If you wear more than one piercing per ear, size the hoops down as you move up the ear so they do not overlap:

  • First hole (lobe): your main hoop, anywhere from 15 to 45 mm.
  • Second hole: 10 to 12 mm huggie, plain or with a line of diamonds.
  • Third hole or upper lobe: the smallest, thinnest huggie you can find, or a small stud.

A clean three-piece stack in matching gold color, such as a 20 mm hoop, a 12 mm huggie and a 10 mm huggie, costs about $865 in our 10K Classic line.

Picking your size in four steps

  1. Decide the job. Sleep-in and gym: 10 to 15 mm huggie. Daily wear: 18 to 30 mm. Nights out: 40 mm and up.
  2. Measure your lobe. Note the distance from the piercing to the bottom of the lobe. A hoop smaller than about twice that number will feel snug.
  3. Pick thickness second. Thin tube for delicate, 4 mm+ for bold. Hollow if the size is over 30 mm and comfort matters.
  4. Match your metal. Most of our hoops come in yellow and white gold, many in rose. Pick the color of the chain or watch you wear most.

Questions people ask

What size hoops are most popular?

The 18 to 25 mm range is the everyday favorite because it shows from the front without swinging into collars or phones. In our catalog that range runs from the 18 mm Small Slim-Tube Hoops at $290 to the 24 mm Large Diamond Cut Hoops at $455.

Are big gold hoops heavy?

Not necessarily. Weight depends on construction more than diameter. A hollow or slim-tube 40 mm hoop can weigh less than a thick solid huggie, so choose hollow or slim tube if you want large hoops that stay comfortable all day.

What size is a huggie?

Huggies are usually 10 to 15 mm across, small enough to wrap the lobe with little or no gap. Our plain gold huggie sizes are 10 mm and 12 mm, both $270 in 10K, and diamond huggies start at $730.

Do hoop sizes measure the inside or outside?

Most listings give the outside diameter. On thick hoops the opening is smaller by twice the tube width, so a 20 mm hoop with a 4 mm tube has about a 12 mm opening.
