Gemstone Rings: Ruby and Emerald With Diamonds in 14K Gold
Gemstone rings add color with stones such as ruby, sapphire or emerald. Rings take more knocks than any other jewelry, so durability matters: ruby and sapphire rate 9 on the Mohs scale and wear well daily, while emerald rates 7.5 to 8 and needs a protective setting and gentle cleaning. Ours are 14K gold with diamond accents, from $590.

Which gem for a ring you wear every day
| Gem | Mohs hardness | Toughness | Ring wear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 10 | Good | Excellent |
| Ruby | 9 | Excellent | Excellent, daily |
| Sapphire | 9 | Excellent | Excellent, daily |
| Emerald | 7.5 to 8 | Fair to good | With care; protect from knocks |
Hardness resists scratches; toughness resists chips. GIA rates ruby and sapphire high on both, which is why they are the classic colored engagement stones.
Settings that protect softer gems
A halo of diamonds around an emerald, like the Oval Emerald Ring, does double duty: it adds sparkle and puts metal and harder stones between the emerald and the world. Bezel settings protect even more. Raised prong settings show off color best but leave the gem exposed; keep those for ruby and sapphire.
Cleaning gemstone rings safely
- Ruby and sapphire: warm soapy water and a soft brush. Ultrasonic cleaners are usually safe for untreated or heat-treated stones, not for glass-filled ones.
- Emerald: warm soapy water only. GIA warns that ultrasonic vibration and steam can push out the oil or resin in fractures.
- All: no bleach, no lemon juice, no harsh chemicals.
Natural, lab-created or treated
Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, sellers must disclose lab-created gems and treatments that affect value or care. Heat treatment of ruby and sapphire is common and stable; oiling of emerald is standard. If origin matters to you, ask about the gem in your ring before ordering.
Choosing the gem by meaning or month
| Gem | Birth month | Common meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | July | Love, passion |
| Emerald | May | Renewal, growth |
| Sapphire | September | Loyalty, wisdom |
| Diamond | April | Strength, commitment |
A gem ring is one of the few gifts that can be personal without engraving. Match the birthstone, add diamonds for sparkle, and the ring tells its own story.
Gold color with colored gems
Rose gold warms rubies and makes them glow. Yellow gold brings out the green in emeralds and gives a vintage look. White gold makes sapphires read bluer and cooler. Since our gemstone rings are made to order in all three colors, choose the color that makes the gem look its best on her hand, or match the gold she already wears.
Gemstone rings as everyday rings
Ruby rings make excellent everyday rings, nearly as tough as diamond. Emerald rings are better as rings you wear often but not always: take them off for the gym, cleaning and the beach. If you want green every day, a halo design like ours puts diamonds and gold around the emerald to absorb the knocks.
How a gem ring is priced
On these rings the price reflects the gold, the gem, the small diamonds and the bench work to set them. The gems here are small accent sizes, so color quality and the design matter more than carat weight. A large ruby or sapphire center, graded on its own, is a different purchase priced mostly by the gem; that is a job for a custom ring, where you see the design and exact price first.
Evil eye and symbol rings with color
Several of our 14K rings use a colored stone as a symbol rather than a classic gem setting, such as the evil eye designs framed by small diamonds. They are made to the same standard of solid gold and real diamonds, and they are some of the most popular gifts at under $650.
