Gold Plated vs Gold Filled vs Vermeil vs Solid Gold

The short answer

Solid gold is karat gold all the way through. Gold filled bonds a thick karat gold layer (at least 1/20 of the metal weight) to a base metal. Gold plated has a thin layer, as little as 0.175 microns. Vermeil is at least 2.5 microns of gold over sterling silver. Only solid gold keeps real metal value.

The four types side by side

All four can look identical on day one. The difference is how much gold there is, where it sits, and what happens after a year of wear.

Solid gold

Solid gold means the karat alloy runs through the entire piece. File into a 10K chain and you find 10K gold; file into 14K and you find 14K. Nothing wears through, because there is no "through" to wear to.

"Solid" is about the metal, not whether the piece is hollow. A hollow chain made of 10K gold tubing is still solid 10K gold in its walls; it just uses less of it. The FTC Guides say hollow pieces should disclose the hollow center and should not be called "solid." Our Hollow Cuban Chain 8.5mm ($4,870) is listed as hollow for exactly that reason.

How much gold is really in solid gold, by karat:

KaratGold contentPure gold in a 20 g pieceMelt value at about $4,000/oz
10K41.7%8.3 gabout $1,070
14K58.3%11.7 gabout $1,500
18K75%15 gabout $1,930

Melt value is only the metal. Retail prices also cover design, labor and stones, and gold moves every day, so treat the last column as a picture of scale. Gold traded around $4,000 to $4,100 an ounce in October 2026. Pick a karat with the gold karat guide.

Gold filled

Gold filled is a sheet of karat gold bonded to a base metal core with heat and pressure, then drawn into wire or rolled into sheet. Under the FTC Guides, "gold filled" means the karat gold layer is at least 10K, covers all significant surfaces, and weighs at least 1/20 of the total metal. A stamp like "1/20 14K GF" means one-twentieth of the weight is 14K gold.

In a 20 g gold-filled chain, that is about 1 g of 14K gold, or roughly 0.58 g of pure gold. Compare that to 11.7 g in a solid 14K chain of the same weight.

Gold filled wears far better than plating because the layer is thick, often hundreds of times thicker than flash plating. It is a fair option for inexpensive everyday chains. But once the layer wears through at a clasp or a link edge, the brass shows and it cannot be fixed cleanly.

"Rolled gold plate" and "gold overlay" use the same bonding process with a thinner layer, at least 1/40 of the metal weight under FTC terms.

Gold plated

Gold plating deposits a thin film of gold onto a base metal with electricity. The FTC sets two named tiers:

  • Gold electroplate: at least 10K gold, at least 0.175 microns thick (about 7 millionths of an inch).
  • Heavy gold electroplate: at least 10K gold, at least 2.5 microns thick (about 100 millionths of an inch), roughly 14 times thicker.

For scale, a human hair is roughly 50 to 100 microns wide. Even heavy plating is a tiny fraction of that. Plating wears first where metal rubs metal or skin: clasps, ring bottoms, the inside of a bracelet, the underside of chain links. On a chain worn daily, that can mean visible wear in weeks to months.

"PVD gold" and "IP gold" on stainless steel are vapor-deposited coatings. They are tougher than basic electroplate, but they are still a coating over steel, not gold jewelry. See stainless steel vs gold chain.

Vermeil

Vermeil (say "ver-MAY") is a specific, regulated term. Under the FTC Guides it means sterling silver coated on all significant surfaces with gold of at least 10K, at least 2.5 microns thick. So vermeil is heavy plating with a precious-metal core.

That makes it better than plated brass: the base metal is silver, which is hypoallergenic for most people, and the gold layer is at the heavy-plate standard. But the layer still wears, and when it does, silver shows through and can tarnish dark. Vermeil is popular in fashion jewelry priced between plated and solid gold.

How long each lasts

Wear depends on thickness, where the piece sits and what it touches. Rough expectations for daily wear:

TypeNecklace or pendantRing or braceletShortens life
Flash plated (under 0.5 micron)Weeks to monthsWeeksSweat, pool, ocean, perfume
Heavy plated or vermeil (2.5 microns)A year or moreMonthsFriction against desks, phones, other jewelry
Gold filledMany yearsSeveral yearsRough handling, harsh cleaners
Solid goldDecades and beyondDecadesNothing that ends it; scratches polish out

Miami adds two stressors: salt water and chlorine. Both speed up wear on coatings and can attack base metals underneath. Solid gold handles them better, but take any chain off before the pool. When skin turns green under a piece, that is usually copper in a base metal or a low-gold alloy reacting; read why jewelry turns skin green.

How each is labeled

Read the full stamp and the full listing. The karat number often comes first even when the piece is not solid.

  • Solid: "10K," "14K," "417," "585," with no letters after.
  • Gold filled: "GF" or "1/20 14K GF."
  • Rolled gold plate: "RGP" or "1/40 12K RGP."
  • Plated: "GP," "GEP," "HGE," "18K plated," "gold tone."
  • Vermeil: "925" with "vermeil" in the listing.

Listings to treat with suspicion: "18K gold" on a $30 chain, "14K gold finish," "real gold layered," and "will not tarnish" on anything that is not solid gold. More on stamps in gold hallmarks and stamps, and how to check a piece you already own in how to tell if gold is real.

Caring for each type

Care slows down wear on coated pieces and keeps solid gold looking new. The rules get stricter as the gold layer gets thinner.

TypeClean withAvoid
Solid goldWarm water, mild dish soap, soft brushChlorine; it can attack gold alloys over time
Gold filledWarm soapy water, soft clothAbrasive polishes, long soaks
VermeilSoft dry cloth after each wearSilver dip, which strips gold; polishing cloths with abrasive
Gold platedSoft dry cloth onlyWater, perfume, lotion, sweat, any polishing

Store plated and vermeil pieces separately in soft pouches, away from air and humidity, so they do not rub or tarnish. Put them on after perfume and lotion, not before. Solid gold needs far less babying: wipe it down, clean it now and then, and keep it away from the pool. For a full routine, see how to clean a gold chain.

Which to buy for each situation

  • A chain you will wear every day for years: solid gold. 10K for toughness and price, 14K for richer color.
  • A trend piece for a season: plated is fine; price it like a disposable.
  • A budget layering chain you want to last: gold filled.
  • Sensitive skin on a budget: vermeil, until the layer wears; then solid gold.
  • A gift meant to be kept: solid gold, even if it means a smaller piece. A 10K pendant at a few hundred dollars outlives a plated one at any price.
  • A base for diamonds: solid gold only. Plating wears around settings, and diamonds deserve a setting that lasts as long as they do.

Myths about gold layers

  • "18K plated is better than 10K solid." No. The 18K describes a coating that can be well under a micron thick. A 10K solid piece has 41.7% gold through its whole body.
  • "Gold filled means the inside is filled with gold." It is the opposite: a base metal core with a karat gold layer bonded on the outside.
  • "Stainless steel with gold PVD never fades." PVD is tougher than basic plating, but it is still a coating and it can scratch through at clasps and edges.
  • "Hollow means plated." A hollow chain made of karat gold tubing is real gold in its walls. It must be labeled hollow, but it is not plated.
  • "Rubbing it on a ceramic tile proves it is solid." A streak test only shows the surface. A thick plating can pass. The XRF test at a jeweler reads the metal reliably.

Is solid gold worth the price

For anything you plan to wear every day for years, yes. Solid gold costs more upfront, but it keeps metal value, can be polished back to new and can be passed down. Plated pieces are fine for trends you will wear a few times.

Solid gold does not have to cost thousands. Our 10K gold pendants start low: the Gold Initial Necklace is $365, the Classic Heart Locket $380 and the Gold Cross Pendant $430. Every chain in our catalog is 10K gold, from fine 0.6 mm Singapore chains at $290 to the 5 mm Rope Chain at $4,960. Questions people ask

Does gold plated wear off?

Yes. Plating is a thin film, as little as 0.175 microns under FTC terms, and it wears through where the piece rubs skin or metal. On daily-wear chains and rings that can take weeks to months.

Is gold filled real gold?

It has a real karat gold layer, at least 10K and at least 1/20 of the total metal weight, bonded over a base metal core. It is real gold on the outside, but it is not solid gold and has little resale value.

Is solid gold worth the price?

For pieces you wear every day, yes. Solid gold never wears through, can be polished and repaired, and keeps its metal value, so a 20 g 14K chain holds about 11.7 g of pure gold.

Is vermeil better than gold plated?

Usually. Vermeil requires sterling silver underneath and at least 2.5 microns of 10K or better gold, which is heavier than basic plating. It still wears over time and is not solid gold.
