Stainless Steel vs Real Gold Chains: Cost, Wear and Value

The short answer

A stainless steel chain costs a fraction of gold, is tough and does not rust, but it has almost no resale value and gold-plated steel fades as the plating wears. A solid gold chain costs more, keeps its color for life, carries real metal value you can measure by the gram, and can be repaired and passed down.

Quick answer

If you want a look for a season, steel does the job. If you want a chain that is still yours, still gold-colored and still worth something in ten years, buy solid gold.

The two chains can look alike in a photo. In the hand they are different products:

  • Stainless steel is an iron alloy with chromium (and usually nickel) that resists rust. On its own it is silver-gray. "Gold" steel chains are steel with a thin gold-colored coating on the surface.
  • Solid gold is karat gold through every link. A 10K chain is 41.7% pure gold, a 14K chain 58.3%. Scratch it, and you find more gold underneath.

Every chain in our catalog is solid 10K gold, from a $290 Singapore Chain 0.6mm to the $4,960 Rope Chain 5mm. Nothing is plated steel.

Material: what is inside each chain

Jewelry steel is usually grade 304 or 316L. 316L, often sold as "surgical steel," has roughly 16 to 18% chromium and 10 to 14% nickel, plus molybdenum that helps it resist corrosion and limits how much nickel comes out against the skin. It is strong, cheap and easy to mass-produce.

Gold chains start with pure gold and add silver, copper and zinc for strength and color. The karat number tells you the gold share:

StampKaratPure gold
41710K41.7%
58514K58.3%
75018K75%

Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, a seller must disclose the karat of gold and may not call a plated item "gold" without saying it is plated. That is your first test of any listing: if it says "gold chain" but gives no karat, assume it is plated. Our guide on how to tell if gold is real goes deeper.

Look over time

Fresh out of the box, a gold-plated steel Cuban can look close to a gold one. The gap opens with wear. Plating is measured in microns: under the FTC rules, "gold electroplate" needs at least 0.175 microns of gold and "heavy gold electroplate" at least 2.5 microns. Many fashion chains use PVD coating, which is tougher than basic plating, but it is still a surface layer.

Chains take a lot of friction. They rub on your neck, your shirt collar and themselves every time you move. The first places to fade are the clasp, the edges of each link and the back of the chain where it sits on your skin. Once steel shows through, the chain reads two-tone and there is no fixing it short of re-plating.

Plain stainless steel does not have this problem because there is no coating; it just stays steel-colored. The issue is only when steel is sold as a gold look.

Solid gold keeps its color. A 10K chain can look slightly paler than 14K side by side, and any gold chain picks up fine scratches, but a polish brings back the same color because the gold goes all the way through. See how to clean a gold chain for the routine that keeps it bright.

Value: what each chain is worth later

This is the biggest difference and the easiest to check. A steel chain's resale value is close to zero. A solid gold chain always contains a measurable amount of gold.

Here is how melt value works, using the October 2026 gold price of about $4,074 per troy ounce (about $131 per gram of pure gold):

KaratPure gold shareApproximate melt value per gram of chain
10K41.7%About $55
14K58.3%About $76
18K75%About $98

Melt value is the floor, not the retail price. A finished chain also carries the cost of manufacturing, design and the seller's margin, and a buyer of scrap gold pays below melt. Still, the gold is there, and it moves with the gold market. Ask any seller for the chain's weight in grams so you know what you are paying per gram; our Cuban link weight chart shows typical weights by width.

Repairs and resizing

Chains break. Clasps wear, a link catches on a seatbelt, a jump ring opens. What happens next depends on the metal.

  • Gold is the metal jewelry benches are built for. A broken gold link can be soldered, a worn clasp swapped, and a chain shortened by removing links. The repair blends in because the new solder and parts are gold too.
  • Steel has a much higher melting point and does not take ordinary jewelry solder well. Most jewelers will not repair it, and the cost of a laser weld usually exceeds the price of the chain. In practice, a broken steel chain gets replaced.
  • Plated steel has both problems: repair heat damages the plating, so the fixed area shows.

That repairability is what makes gold an heirloom metal. The same chain can be cleaned, fixed and worn by the next person.

Skin reactions

Nickel is the most common jewelry allergy. Stainless steel contains nickel, but 316L is designed to release very little of it, so most people wear it without trouble. People with a strong nickel allergy can still react.

Gold-plated steel adds another risk: when the plating wears, skin touches the base metal directly, and sweat speeds that up. Many "green neck" complaints come from plated pieces. Our page on why jewelry turns skin green covers the chemistry.

Solid yellow gold rarely causes reactions, especially in 14K and up. 10K contains more alloy metals, so a small number of very sensitive people do better in 14K. Some white golds use nickel as a whitener, so if you are sensitive and want white, ask about the alloy.

You do not need a huge budget to get solid gold. Thin everyday chains in our chains collection start at $290, the Curb Chain 1.5mm is $300, and the Flat Miami Cuban Chain 3.7mm is $1,355. For the full Cuban look, the Miami Cuban Chain 5mm is $4,260. Questions people ask

Is stainless steel jewelry cheap?

It is inexpensive, not necessarily low quality. Good 316L steel is strong and rust resistant. The catch is value: a steel chain has almost no resale or metal value, while a gold chain always contains gold you can measure by weight.

Does gold-plated steel fade?

Yes. The gold layer is thin, often well under a few microns, and friction wears it first at the clasp and link edges. Once steel shows through, the chain looks two-tone and can only be re-plated, not polished back.

Is a real gold chain worth it?

If you will wear it for years, yes. A solid gold chain keeps its color, can be repaired and resized, and carries metal value. At October 2026 gold prices, 10K gold holds roughly $55 of gold per gram of chain.

How can I tell if my chain is steel or gold?

Look for a karat stamp such as 10K, 14K, 417 or 585 near the clasp. Steel is often stamped 316L or "stainless." Steel is also lighter for its size than gold, and a jeweler can confirm with an acid or XRF test.
