Natural Diamond Necklaces

The short answer

Natural diamond necklaces use earth-mined diamonds, the choice for buyers who want rarity and a stronger resale market than lab-grown stones have. At Franky Diamonds a natural diamond necklace is built through the custom process, with the design and exact price set before anything is made.

Both are real diamonds. The FTC Jewelry Guides only require that lab-grown origin be clearly disclosed and bar the word "natural" on lab stones. For the long version, read lab vs natural diamonds and the natural diamond guide.

What a natural diamond necklace costs

A necklace with many matched natural stones is one of the most expensive pieces in jewelry, because every carat costs more than its lab-grown equal and the stones must be matched for color. Natural diamond prices have softened lately; IDEX trade data showed an 11.5 percent drop from March 2025 to March 2026. That makes natural more reachable than a few years ago, though still well above lab-grown. For where the market sits now, see diamond prices in 2026. For comparison, the lab diamond house necklaces run $4,200 to $8,950 at lab diamond necklaces.

Diamond quality explained

GIA grades every diamond on cut, color, clarity and carat. On a natural necklace, color matching is the hardest part, because mined stones vary more. The house standard on graded pieces is E color, the second-highest grade, and VS1 clarity, which looks clean to the naked eye. GIA notes VS and VVS stones usually look the same without magnification, so VS1 is a smart place to buy: you do not pay for rarity you cannot see.

Necklace lengths and where they sit

On most women, 16 inches sits just above the collarbone, 18 on it and 20 just below. A fully set natural diamond necklace usually looks best at 16 to 18 inches. A pendant necklace adds the pendant's drop to the chain length. For men, 20 to 22 inches. Full chart at the women's necklace length guide.

Metal, karat and layering

White gold or platinum-white settings keep white natural diamonds looking their whitest. Yellow gold warms them, a look some buyers want on purpose. 14K gold, 58.3 percent pure, is the usual choice for fine diamond necklaces. Layer with a plain gold chain 2 inches longer, or wear it alone on its own. Browse the current pieces at diamond necklaces.

What to bring to a custom consultation

  • Style: a line of matched stones, a pendant on a chain, or a cluster design. Photos help.
  • Length: measure a necklace you already like, end to end with the clasp closed.
  • Metal: white gold for the iciest look, yellow for warmth.
  • Budget: a real number lets the design match it, trading stone size against coverage.
  • Stone priorities: say whether size, whiteness or clarity matters most to you.

With those five answers, the design and the exact price come back before anything is made, and nothing moves forward until you approve both.

Building one, and care

One more point on value. A natural diamond necklace with many small stones holds less resale value per dollar than one with a few larger stones, because small natural diamonds trade at lower prices per carat. If resale matters to you, put more of the budget into fewer, larger stones, and keep the paperwork that comes with them.

The custom process is three steps: idea, then design and exact price before anything is made, then the piece is made and delivered, insured. Bring the length, the style (tennis line, pendant, cluster) and the budget. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush behind the stones; check the clasp and settings every few months. Questions people ask

What length necklace should I choose?

For most women, 16 to 18 inches; 18 sits on the collarbone. For men, 20 to 22 inches.

Are the diamonds certified?

On a custom natural necklace, ask for grading details on the main stones during the design step, before you approve the price.

Is 14K gold good for everyday wear?

Yes. 14K gold is hard enough for daily wear and holds diamond settings well, with a richer color than 10K.
