Lab Diamond Pendants

A lab-grown diamond is pure carbon crystallized as diamond, just like a mined stone. The difference is where it formed: in a growth chamber over weeks rather than underground over a very long time. Hardness, refractive index and the way light breaks into color are the same. A jeweler cannot tell them apart by eye; it takes laboratory equipment. That is why the US focuses on disclosure. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, sellers must clearly say a diamond is lab-grown and may not use words like "natural" or "genuine" in a way that hides it. Lab-grown prices have fallen sharply over the past several years, faster than mined diamond prices, so the gap per carat is wide. On a pendant, that gap shows up in one of three ways:

• Bigger center stone for the same budget on a solitaire.
• Full coverage on an iced pendant, where hundreds of small stones add up.
• Higher grade at the same size, for example moving to E color.

A small solitaire or halo pendant sits on a 1 to 1.5 mm chain at 16 to 18 inches, right at the collarbone. A large iced lab pendant needs a 4 mm or wider Cuban, Franco or rope chain, usually at 22 to 24 inches. The bigger the pendant, the stronger the chain should look. Most lab-grown diamonds in the US are graded by IGI, and GIA also issues reports for lab-grown stones. Grades use the same 4Cs: cut, color, clarity and carat. A grading report is most useful on a single center stone of meaningful size. On pavé pieces with many tiny stones, the stones are graded as a group. The house standard on graded pieces is E color and VS1 clarity, which looks clean to the naked eye. See GIA vs IGI for what each report covers.

For a solitaire pendant, four prongs or a bezel are the two common settings: prongs show the most light, a bezel protects the edge. For an iced piece, pavé covers the surface. Make sure the bail clears your chain and clasp. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, especially behind the stones where lotion collects and dulls the sparkle.

Lab-grown pricing makes the jump from 1 to 2 carats far more reachable than with mined stones. Size also changes the chain: anything over about 1 carat looks best on a slightly stronger chain than a hair-fine one.
