How to Handle a Kinked or Dented Chain
A kink is a link that has twisted so the chain will not lie flat. A dent is a crushed hollow wall. On a solid chain, a jeweler can often work a small kink out or replace the bad link. A dent in a hollow link is usually permanent, because the gold shell has nowhere to go back to. Do not squeeze it with pliers at home. Chain repair is not a published Franky service, and there is no posted repair price. Call to ask. Do not assume yes.
Chains, before they get kinked
See allKink versus dent
Look at the chain on a flat table in good light. A kink is a link, or a few links, rotated so the pattern breaks. The gold is still the right shape. It is just facing the wrong way. The chain wants to flip or stand up at that spot. A dent is different. The link is creased, flattened or caved in. You can feel a ridge with a fingernail. Hollow chains dent. Solid chains mostly kink, though a solid link can still get a flat spot if it is smashed hard enough.
Fine chains, the 0.6 mm to 1.5 mm range, kink from being slept in or from a tight coil in a box. Wide Cuban links kink less and dent more when they are hollow. The title of a hollow piece usually says hollow. If it does not, weight is the clue: a very light chain that looks wide is hollow. Treat it as hollow until you know.
The chains you can compare in the case are at chains. Cleaning is a separate job from straightening. Do not scrub a kink and call it fixed. Dirt and a twist are both visible and they are not the same. Washing steps are in how to clean a gold chain.
What a bench can do, and what stays bent
On a solid link, a jeweler may be able to rotate the kinked link back with chain pliers that are smooth, or cut the bad link out and solder a new one in. That is ordinary bench work in the trade. It is not something the product pages promise, and it is not listed among Franky's published services. If you bring a chain in, you are asking, not redeeming a repair plan.
Hollow links are a thin shell. Once the shell creases, pushing it out from inside is rarely possible, because you cannot get inside. Filling a dent with solder leaves a scar and can burn through the shell. Many benches will tell you a dented hollow Cuban is done, or that the honest fix is to replace a section, which may not match. Believe that the first time. Do not pay for a polish that only shines the dent.
Clasps kink too. A bent box tongue or a lobster that no longer snaps is a clasp problem, not a link problem. Replacing a clasp is common bench work and still not a listed service here. Clasp types, so you can name what broke, are in chain clasp types and lobster vs box clasp.
What not to do at the kitchen table
- Do not use household pliers. The jaws are serrated. They print a pattern into the gold that no cloth will remove.
- Do not bend the chain back and forth to "work it out." You fatigue the link and it snaps a week later.
- Do not hammer a dent flat. You will widen the link and crack any solder joint next to it.
- Do not heat the chain with a lighter. You will discolor the gold and loosen stones if any are set in the links.
- Do not pull both ends of a knotted, kinked chain. Pulling turns a kink into a break. Untangle first, slowly. Steps are in how to untangle a chain.
If the chain is diamond-set, stop even earlier. A twist in an iced link can be hiding a bent prong. Forcing it will drop stones. Diamond cleaning and a look at the settings are how to clean diamond jewelry, after a jeweler has seen the bend, not before.
Solder, showers and the cost question
Jewelers solder gold with gold solder matched as closely as they can to the karat. A repaired link can show a slight color line. On a high-polish Cuban that line is more visible than on a textured chain. Hollow chain is a poor soldering candidate because the shell overheats. Solid chain is the one solder belongs on.
There is no published price for this, because repair is not a listed service and because the job depends on how many links, what karat, and whether stones are in the way. Anyone quoting you a single number for "chain repair" without seeing the chain is guessing. Get a price on that chain, in writing, from whoever is actually going to do the work.
Showers and sleep are how the next kink happens. Chlorine and soap are a separate kind of damage, covered in showering with a gold chain. Take a fine chain off to sleep. A chain under a pillow twists. That is physics, not bad luck.
If you still want eyes on it
Photograph the kink in daylight, on a flat surface, with a coin in the frame so the scale is obvious. Note whether the chain is stamped 10K or 14K, and whether the title or the stamp says hollow. Then call 954-504-5640 and ask if the showroom wants to see it. The address is 7900 NW 27th Ave, Unit 506, Miami FL 33147. Do not ship a damaged chain as if it were a return. All sales are final. The 7-day window is for a manufacturing defect, not for a link you slept on.
Prevention is still the cheaper job: clasp closed, chain flat, hollow pieces alone. Storage is how to store fine jewelry.
Questions people ask
Can a dented hollow chain be fixed?
Usually no. A hollow link is a thin gold shell, and a crease in that shell does not push back out cleanly. Solder can scar it or burn through. Many benches will say the honest answer is to replace a section or retire the chain. Solid links are a different, more fixable case.
How much does chain repair cost?
There is no posted repair price, and chain repair is not a published Franky service. A bench that does offer the work prices it by the chain in front of them: how many links, the karat, hollow or solid, and whether stones are set. Ask for a number on that chain, in writing.
Can you solder a Cuban link?
A bench can solder a solid Cuban link or swap a bad one. The seam may show a slight color difference. Hollow Cuban links are a poor candidate because the shell is thin and overheats. Soldering is trade practice, not a service listed on this site.
